tenaciously.
Petite, blond, with sparkl-
ing blue eyes, Ms. Birger ex-
udes energy and determina-
tion — qualities which enabl-
ed her to survive the grueling
years in the Kovno ghetto and
three concentration camps.
C he memories of the
Holocaust, her father's death
while trying to save a group
of Jewish children, and the
suffering she and - her mother
endured at the hands of the
Nazis, outwardly do not seem
to have scarred Ms. Birger.
Rather they have served as
catalysts, propelling her to a
life of action and devotion to
children.
Trudi Birger began her
volunteer work 30 years ago
when she was a full-time
microbiologist and pregnant
with her third child. She
established a B'nai B'rith
lodge to care for 50 under-
privileged families — in-
cluding 500 children — in
Jerusalem's Romema
neighborhood. By 1970 Ms.
Birger was running the pro-
gram entirely on her own.

devotion to others
[ earned her
..,_ lational
recognition.
Working in conjunction with
the Rehavia Foundation, she
helped provide textbooks,
eyeglasses, individual tutor-
g and enrichment activities
for the children as well as
organizing operations and
medical treatment for their
parents.
Many of her "children," as
she calls them, have moved
.from the most destitute of
backgrounds to positions in
law, banking and the arts.
"Wherever I go in the city,"
she smiles, "I come across
these children." Recently, Ms.
Birger found a policewoman
'. - anding by her car; she had
been waiting there for two
hours — not to give her a
ticket but to thank her for
having made it all possible.
Trudi Birger's selfless devo-
tion to others earned her na-
j- ional recognition in 1981
when she received the Presi-
dent's Award for
Volunteerism from President
Navon and in 1991 when she
was named a 'Worthy of
'Jerusalem' by Mayor Teddy
.Kollek.
But even for a lady of
boundless energy, a life
