O
ne of literature's
leading lights is now
illuminating the
stage.
Author and Rabbi Chaim
Potok, whose critically ac-.
claimed novels include The
Chosen and The Promise,
has chosen the Philadelphia
Festival Theatre for New
Plays as a theatrical bimah
of sorts.
The company, which pro
duced two Potok one-acts
two years ago, will presen
his latest work, a full- length
production titled The Play of
Lights. It is based on the
writer's best-selling book,
The Book of Lights.
The rabbi/writer is not one 1
to write off the power of the e
word —whether it be in book
or stage form. Yet this whole
theater business is relative-
ly new for a man who has
made book — and a career —
on the medium of literature
for so long.
"When it. comes to the
stage, the more familiar you
become with it, the more -:
comfortable," says Mr.
Potok.
Chaim Potok has never
been comfortable with com-
forting the unafflicted'
—himself included. "It is
bad to slip into characters
like an old shoe. It is
dangerous to be too comfor-
table," he says.
His works wage war
against. the complacent. Mr.(i7:t-,
Potok's books often choose
the battlefield of religion,
where tugs of war between
the secular and religious
Jewish worlds rage on.
The Play of Lights ad-
Michael Elkin is the
entertainment editor of the
Jewish Exponent in.
