n Israel, a country famous
for its informal attitudes,
ballroom dancing may
seem as out of place as a tie
and jacket. However, Igor and
Helena Nikon, a pair of cham-
pion ballroom dancers from
the former Soviet Union, are
spreading the word about the
splendors of the fox trot, the
tango, the waltz and the rum-
ba, and Israelis are catching
on quickly.
An engineer by profession,
Igor fell in love with ballroom
dancing and joined a dance
troupe in Ludsk, eastern
Ukraine, where Helena was
studying ballet and
choreography.
They met at the Lovovsk
dance company, but it was far
from love at first sight.
"Because I was younger by
almost eight years, I didn't
want to dance with him. But
my teacher told me I must.
When we did, though, it was
magic."
The Nikons were married
soon after and began to work
professionally. Despite tough
competition, they placed se-
cond in national ballroom
competitions in Ludsk and
Kishinow, and third in
Minsk.
But despite their success,
there were many difficulties.
"As Jews, it was impossible to
get permission to travel and
participate in international
(__„ competitions. And without
I the reputation this brings,
one cannot become a renown-
ed teacher."
When the immigration
in Russia eased,
1,
Igor and Helena decided to
make aliyah. "We wanted to
feel how it would be where
everyone is Jewish," says
1 , Helena.
In Israel at last, the Nikons
were determined to earn a
ing as dancers. But within a
1 month, the Gulf War began.
The Bat Sheva Dance Troupe
very generously offered the
Nikons a bomb-safe studio
where they could practice and
keep in shape. "We've only
--, met good people here in
Israel," says Helena.
As soon as the war ended,
the Nikons went to work, tak-
ing first place in the Latina
r) competition in Israel's first
ballroom dancing champion-
ship. The 100 spectators turn-
ed to 600 during the second
national championships, in
which the Nikons placed
third.
Their classes are equally
successful. ❑
