uthor Gay Rubin of
Bloomfield Hills re-
cently read from her
newly published short story
collection, On a Good Day
(Ridgeway Press, $8.95) at
the home of Julie Cumm-
ings. More than 50 col-
leagues and friends came to
the coffee to hear Ms.
Rubin's prose.
Her collection contains
seven stories, including the
title selection. One story
centers on a chance meeting
with Paul Newman. When
Ms. Rubin addressed the
crowd, she said that some of
her best story ideas came
from friends. "If I write
about you, I'll ask you," she
promised.
Ms. Rubin also talked
about juggling the roles of
author, mother and wife. "I
feel like I never accomplish
anything. But apparently, I
finished one thing," she
said.
Some of the listeners in the
crowd included: Jan Mir-
bach, Ms. Rubin's mother,
Trudy Weiss, Lauren Liss,
Linda Benson, Elyse
Schostak, Jain Lauter,
Shelley Golden, Suzie
Mitchell, Karen Jacobson,
SuSu Sosnick and Marcie
Orley.
Ms. Rubin, who just
received a grant from the
Arts Foundation of Mich-
igan, has studied and taught
creative writing at the Uni-
versity of Michigan. She also
studied with short story
master Gordon Lish in
New York. She is past presi-
dent of Detroit Women
Writers.
On a Good Day is available
at the Birmingham Book
Store, Bookpeople and Metro
News.
