The caracal desert cat.

Run by the Society for the
Protection of Nature in Israel,
the Field School offers lec-
tures, hikes and jeep tours in
Hebrew as well as camps in
English consisting of hiking,
scientific lectures and in-
dependent study on the pro-
blems of the desert. Dedicated
to developing a "feeling of
belonging to nature," the
Field School enables
academics to study natural
phenomena, and students,
children and adults to
familiarize themselves with
the great outdoors.
The Field School's snake
house, with its collection of
local reptiles, is usually
visited at night, where with
the aid of a torch one can view
the slitherers in their natural
habitat. Other nocturnal
stalkers include the hyena,
the caracal desert cat (noted
for its long ears), the wild cat,
which is a bit larger than its
domesticated cousin and the
sand cat (said to be the
smallest feline in the world).
Their caves and those of the
foxes and wolves appear like
black holes set against the ca-
nyon ridges.
Scientists at the Field
School are housed in unusual
hexagonal bungalows, and a
hostel has accommodation for
180 additional visitors. A
pleasant, chlorinated, un-
natural oasis, the huge
Moshav Hatzeva swimming
pool is available to all visitors
and a picnic area shaded by
umbrella" acacias is
planned.
However, it is nature in its
most primitive that draws the
visitors. And, aside from the
good fences which bar
vehicles, the reservoir, the
single paved road, and the
lookout point, the Sheizaf is
a microcosm of the desert as
it was thousands of years
ago.

According to a poll con-
ducted by George Gallup,
Jr., U.S. Jews vote Democrat
— but a little less so than in
the past. In 1986, 50 per cent
of American Jews were
Democrats and 16 per cent
Republicans. In 1966, the
figures were 64 per cent and
nine per cent.
