Special to The Jewish News
he land of the unex-
pected and the unusual
— that's Israel. From
my deep drawer of the odd
and the surprising:
Messiah Causes Controver-
sy. The haredi Jews of Meah
Shearim are not the only ones
who object to advertising
which they consider offensive.
Christian residents of the
village of Yafiah, near
Nazareth, have demanded
that a large Chabad poster,
proclaiming "Prepare for the
coming of the Messiah," be
removed. They say it offends
their sensitivity as Chris-
tians, who believe the
Messiah has already come.
The Rose by Any Other
Name. Of late there has been
a trend here to give children
odd and unusual names.
Rabid fans name their kids
after football players. Names
which sound well overseas are
also proving popular, like
Dean, Sean, Jan, Shirley,
Eleanor and the like. Ilana
Gaash, writing in Hadashot,
urges that the government
draw up a list of acceptable
Hebrew names, and all
parents must choose from
that list. She claims that such
is the case in France and
Holland.
Kibbutz Keeps Ivy League
Clean. Kitchens in the dining
rooms of such universities as
Harvard, Princeton and Cor-

Works, owned by Kibbutz Ein
Harod. Israel Business Today,
the economic newsletter,
reports that the company has
earned a million dollars from
these exports. Customers also
include the Marriott chain of
hotels.
Attention Margaret Tut-
wiler. During the Gulf War,
Israel transferred updated in-
formation to the U.S. showing
that the computer program of
the Patriot missile tired after
eight hours of continuous
operation and caused devia-
tions when making its
calculations. The American
military began to make im-
provements in the program
leisurely, but if they had
reacted more quickly they
might have prevented the
tragedy at Daharan in Saudi
Arabia, where an Iraqi Scud
killed 27 American soldiers
and wounded 98. The Patriot.
