interview to gauge the can-
didate's psychological make-
up, and presentation of pro-
jects illustrating the students
various interests. "It is
everything but an IQ test:'
says Eleanor Heft, director of
Public Relations.
Shoham Levy is one of a
dozen science students who
are as brilliant in music as in
math and major in both. "The
goal here is not for high
marks," he points out, "but to
study each subject in depth
and gain a full grasp of the
topic." Now nearing the end of
his first year of study, Itai
Ryb, who majors in chemistry,
speaks excitedly of his week-
ly course in Integrated
Studies: "I particularly en-
joyed studying the cosmos,
which we looked at from both
scientific and historical
perspectives."
It is impossible to compare
the Arts and Science
Academy with ordinary high
schools. Here students move
noiselessly along the cor-
ridors; the library, open till 11
p.m., is constantly full of in-
dependent learners; and the
computer terminals are never
idle. Even the students refer
to their lessons as courses,
their major subjects as their
fields of study and their
rooms as rna'onot (dorms).
The idea for the
school began 10
years ago when
education for the
academically
limited was the
priority.
Attitudes to study are also
most unusual for high school
students. Says Uri Maoz, "At
home I would lie on my bed,
listen to music, go out, and if
I had time, do some
homework. Here at the
Academy, it's a whole dif-
ferent ball game. We often
have tests to do even after for-
mal studying hours."
In addition to their studies
the students are expected to
contribute 2-4 hours a week of
community service. Itai
teaches chemistry to children
at a local school and Shelley,
an art student, works with
mentally handicapped
children.
Mr. Ryb points out that the
educators who planned the
program "failed to consider
the problem of time. They
didn't take into account that
we need to sleep sometime."
With that he is off to find one
of his teachers to discuss a
project he has in mind.0
