Jerusalem's bustling Jaffa
Road, feels that Israeli men
are smartening up because
their partners insist they do.
-, "Women are just not prepared
to put up with poorly-dressed
, husbands or boyfriends any
more," he says. "In the last
' two years the elegant, classic
j Italian style has become
popular: shirts, trousers and
L, jackets in earthy shades. The
distinctive French look is also
in very high demand,
especially leather jackets,
windcheaters, and blousons."
But not all foreign styles
'D are imported. A look at the
window display at Polgat,
Israel's largest textile corn-
pany, shows just how far
Israeli fashion is imitating
foreign styles. Clothes of
many vivid colors draw one
into the store where one is ac-
costed by the sheer number of
stylish shirts, trousers,
jackets, and French style
T-shirts.
"We market clothes for a
number of foreign companies,
such as Daniel Hechter,
Milena, Van Dyke, Soviet and
Carr era, but we also make
our own," says Public Rela-
tions Director Mazal Ben-
David. "So when the boom in
foreign fashions began some
three years ago we were able
to bring in a wide range of
European fashions as well as
making similar Israeli-
influenced designs. One of our
biggest sellers is Italian-style
business suits, while the rise
in the number of tie sales has
been staggering."
Polgat's sales to major
foreign companies like Marks
& Spencer in the United
Kingdom, and Peek and Clap-
penberg,- Dyekhoff and Saks
5th Avenue in the United
States brought in $107
million last year alone. And
sales of men's clothing in
Israel reached an un-
precedented $187 million in
1991.
Tel Aviv businessman, Avi
Hirschfeld, is particularly
pleased to have a wider choice
of clothes. "For many years I
would travel abroad and see
beautiful clothes and wonder
why such styles weren't
available here. I felt almost
embarrassed to bring back
light-colored trousers and
jackets. Fortunately, that's no
longer the case."
