s tood underneath the Jewish
[ wedding canopy.
Three canopies were set up
with three officiating rabbis.
The wives were dressed in
resplendent white gowns,
- the husbands impeccably
garbed in dark suits. Old
'people were crying happily;
music played; there was
'food, and much joyous danc-
ing.
These 10 Jewish mar-
,riages represented the
downfall — the blotting out
`---=the memory — of the Soviet
communist empire which
'destroyed millions of people
because, like Amalek, its
leaders 'had no fear of God.'
, On the contrary, one of the
raisons d'etre of this empire
- was to destroy God and
peoples' faith. As a modern
o' symbol of the victory of God
and Israel over Communism
and Amalek, the statues of
Stalin are turning to dust
and the Soviet Union has
dissolved into a bitter
nightmare.
- The following afternoon, in
the nearby village of Wadi
Nis, I along with a dozen
other Efratians, attended
, the marriage ceremony of
the mukhtar's son.
Since the residents of Efrat
-and Wadi Nis pride them-
L selves on good relationships,
Thit was important that the
rabbi of the neighboring
town should attend. A
number of young men of
m Wadi Nis are studying to be
doctors, and we're helping to
'finance their studies with
the idea that in the future
there will be a medical
commissary.
During the festivities, I
was asked to bless the cou-
ple, and I danced with the
( ‘ ' ' mukhtar, who is my friend.
I couldn't help but think
that although our two
nations are still at war,
when peace finally comes
and the Palestinians tell
their tales, they will have to
acknowledge that in the
over-all picture, even during
D the worst moments of in-
tifada, Israeli doctors and
hospitals were attending
their sick, their maimed,
and their poor. We never
----_, turned our backs on them.
Our future must be forged
in peaceful coexistence and
mutual cooperation. We
have every right to enjoy the
first fruits of our land —in-
cluding and especially the
>_ _produce of Judea and
Samaria. And at the same
time we dare never forget
our humble origins — and
the obligation our Torah
places upon us to help all the
less fortunate than we. Only
then will the memory of
Amalek truly be erased. ❑
