pleasure of staying at Hotel
United Nations.
"You're working with peo-
ple from all over the world,
and that's one of the intrigu-
ing aspects of the work," said
reservations manager Miri
Kolodny. She, too, had a story:
A native of Quincy, Mass.,
and a former teacher, she'd
volunteered for a teaching
program in Israel nine years
ago. She liked the country so
much she decided to stay and
later got into the hotel
' business.
Seated near Miri was An-
nette Shachar, coordinator for
,- groups.
A native of Johannesburg,
South Africa, she emigrated
in 1979 and has worked at the
hotel for six years. One day,
while she was still working in
reception, she attended a
`-, wedding of two Sheraton
employees. That's when she
met night manager Gabi Ben
Shachar from Buenos Aires.
A courtship between a
L night manager and a recep-
tionist was a challenge: It was
hard to find time to be
together. But they managed.
In May 1990, they married.
The wedding guests, many of
them co-workers, represented
countries from all over the
globe.
"We have a big, interna-
tional family here," said
general manager Clement
Hassid, a native of Alexan-
-) dria, Egypt.
The Sheraton, the first in-
ternational hotel chain in
Israel, has long had a policy
of trying to hire promising
young people from varied
places, said Mr. Hassid.
"We want to take young, in-
telligent, highly motivated
people and train them for
hotel work," he said. "We
want to show our guests all
the beautiful young faces of
Israel. Our employees are am-
bassadors for the Sheraton
and also for the country."
These ambassadors enjoyed
an unusual Purim party last
March. When the Sheraton
gave its annual Purim party,
management decided on a
new twist. This time, the staff
came dressed in the garb of
their native countries.
Recent employees as well as
longtimers got dressed in
saris, South American
shawls, West African robes.
"It helped to remind everyone
that all of us in this country
were once immigrants," said
Mr. Hassid.
Sharona Abraham came to
i the party in an Indian sari.

in the housekeeping depart-
,0 ment, as an order taker. She
immigrated to Israel three
years ago. "I work with peo-
