ello, I'm Marta. Wel-
come to the Sheraton
Towers!" The woman
at the reception desk who
greeted me had dark hair and
eyes, dark skin, a flashing
smile and an air of the exotic,
even for Israel.
Marta Dinko indeed came
from a faraway place, as I
found out after I'd been at the
hotel several days and got to
know her better. Ten years
ago, Marta came to Israel
from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
First she studied at an ulpan
to learn Hebrew; then she at-
tended hotel management
school. After working at
several other hotels, she
became a guest service
representative for the
Sheraton Towers, the 72
rooms and suites on the top
four floors of the Sheraton Tel
Aviv Hotel.
"I love Israel!" said Marta,
who speaks English, Hebrew
and her native language,
Amahric, and whose family
joined her in Israel last year.
"It's such a warm, friendly
country. And I love the people
of Israel because of the special
relationship we all have.
We're all Jews together."
All Jews — but Jews from
diverse places, Jews with very
different life histories. That's
why the experience of staying
in an Israeli hotel is an
adventure in cultural diversi-
ty. Not only are the guests
from many countries, but the
employees, too, often come
from far-flung places.
On my recent trip to Israel,
I stayed at the Sheraton
Towers in Tel Aviv and the
Sheraton Jerusalem Plaza;
and both hotels, cosmopolitan
and lively, typify the interna-
tional flavor of Israeli hotels.
Many workers, of course, were
native Israelis, but a good
number were not. At the first
hotel on my itinerary, the
Sheraton Tel Aviv Towers, I
met hotel employees from
Buenos Aires to Bombay. I
even started to dub it Hotel
United Nations.
The day after I arrived, for
example, the waitress who
served me coffee in the lobby
lounge was Lisa Nemes, a
native of Stockholm, Sweden,
who immigrated to Israel a
year ago.
Later, heading for the beach
by way of the lower level, I
passed the housekeeping
headquarters and watched
florist Raphael Samson ar-
ranging a bouquet of flowers
for a guest's room. Two years Ci
ago, he came to Tel Aviv from
Bombay.
"He started as a houseman,
cleaning toilets, doing
everything, but when we saw
how creative and patient he
was with flowers, we decided
to promote him to florist,"
said Kobi Itzhaki, director of
housekeeping for the hotel.
Learning the varied
histories of the non-Israeli
employees was part of the
