ings and chokings — all are
common ways children get
hurt.
Many safeguards seem like
■ shopworn cliches, but they
p always bear repeating: Never
permit a child under 5 to
swim alone or unsupervised;
take CPR training; children
•—• riding bicycles should wear
safety helmets; stop and look

traffic, either on foot or while

Nine out of 10 parents
11 ' believe that their children are
physically fit. But two out of
three children fail to meet a
minimum standard for fitness
set by the President's Coun-
0' cil on Physical Fitness.
In fact, experts say one-
111 third of all 10-year-olds have
at least one of the following:
an elevated blood cholesterol
level or high blood pressure,
a smoking habit, no exercise
routine or obesity.
School-based physical
• education and health classes
may seem like the answer;
but studies show that elemen-
tary school students spend
only two to three minutes
6, vi gorously exercising in the
average gym class period.
• Almost one-fourth of
American students report
• having had little or no health
education throughout their
schooling.
• How active is your family?
Parents who play games,
work and exercise regularly
with their kids can teach
10 them that physical activity is
fun and a natural part of life.
Simple ideas: Put family ac-
tivities on your calendar two
or three times per week. It
doesn't always have to be an
organized sport. It could be
taking a walk around the •
neighborhood, gardening,
raking leaves, riding a bike,
, going to the zoo or skating.
Also, pick activities that in-
clude all ages. Avoid competi-
tion. Involve the whole fami-
P ly in planning and choosing
physical activities. Design
your own family games. Keep
a log of what you've done
0. together.
Poor nutrition leads to
health problems. But develop-
ing good nutrition habits in
youngsters sets a lifelong pat-
tern of eating healthy foods.
There are three rules for
raising kids with good eating
habits, according to the
experts:
• Don't force feed.
• Offer Variety.
• Don't make any food off-
limits. ❑
