RESTAURANT & COCKTAIL LOUNGE

I-•

wonderful qualities in mak-
I ing for a most enjoyable visit.
The Golden Mushroom also
is one restaurant where,
when you ask the waitperson
about a certain dish he or she
can reply with honesty . . . It
has a sort of show and tell
► - with its cook taste every even-
ing . . . Waitpersons partake
of the food, enabling them to
better inform customers how
0 it is.
Even the "doggie bag" at
Golden Mushroom has class
. . . It's not a bag but a box
given customers in which to
take home leftovers.
Very personable and
wonderful evening managers
•-• Kevin Frantz and Pram
Acharya are always on hand
to assist whenever needed .. .
The waitpersons appreciate
their presence and customers
are pleased with this hearty
caring for complete
satisfaction.
If the downstairs Mush-
room Cellar could talk, it
would have a lot of stories to
tell . . . So would its in-
teresting bar . . . One year,
when Mary Wipple was retir-
ing from working across the
0. street at the former Maple
House, somebody wanted to
retire her chair at the
Mushroom Cellar . . . Reid
then came up with the idea of
remembering others, too .. .
And so was born his large
▪ 30-seater angular bar with
oodles of brass plates under
▪ lamination . . . Alan Kaplan,
August 1985; Richard
Steinik, October, 1982, etc.
. :In all, there are 352 name
plates on that bar.
Golden Mushroom has its
own pastry shop, headed by
▪ Pastry Chef Jeff Hammer,
laundry_ and temperature-
controlled wine room built in
1979 and a smoke house ad-
dition erected in 1986.
Reid and Milos are reci-
pients of many outstanding
▪ awards . . . Golden Mushroom
honors have been bestowed
from everywhere . . . About
150 between the three . . . In
Wine Spectator
1990,
magazine gave it Best Award
of Excellence . . . That same
• year, Detroit Monthly rated it
"Restaurant of the Year."
Golden Mushroom has re-
ceived such wide note as a
first-class restaurant that
sometimes hidden is the fact
that it also caters. . . . Many
parties at homes have enjoyed
▪ the fare of Golden Mushroom,
whose name is a drawing card
in itself . . . Downstairs
Mushroom Cellar can be us-
ed on Saturday evenings and
both upstairs and down on
Sundays, with menus created
O. for each individual occasion.
One of Michigan's major
answers to fine dining is

definitely the four-star
Golden Mushroom . . . But
more important is that its
down-to-earth existence has
never been forsaken . . . Reid
Ashton, Chef Milos Cihelka
and their staff can be more
proud of this than all their
awards put together . . . and
they are.
DISA 'N DATA . . . "Little
Red Riding Hood" and lunch
for the kiddies is set for 11
a.m. Aug. 31 at Congregation
Beth Abraham Hillel_ Moses
on W. Maple . . . $6 ticket in-
cludes Red Riding Hood
basket lunch (peanut butter
and jelly sandwich, juice,
cookies and treat) . . . Call the
synagogue, 851-6880, or
Elaine Cohen, 559-8720 .. .
the family program will be
produced by Michigan Opera
Theater . . . Tonight is
25-year reunion by Southfield
High at Sheraton-Oaks in
Novi . . . Tomorrow evening is
50-year class of Central High
at Fairlane Manor.
Third restaurant by Chef
Brian Polcyn (Pike Street and
Chimayo) is slated to open
end of October in Auburn
Hills across from the Palace
. . . Will be called Acadia, first
Michigan restaurant with
two wood-burning ovens to
feature the tastes of wood-
roasted American food . . .
Chef de cuisine will be Laura
Merglewski with a fine track
record (Pike Street, Golden
Mushroom, Rattlesnake Club,
Chez Raphael and helping
Mary and Tom Brady open
Diamond Jim Brady's in
Novi).
Interesting sidelight to
Barcelona, Spain, where the
recent 1992 Olympics were
held, is a translation of the
oft-used Montjuich Hills . . . It
means "Mountain of The
Jews" or "Jews Mountain"
and had been a principal
Jewish cemetery in Calalan,
Spain, which the Jews were
forced to leave in 1391.
This Monday is fifth an-
niversary for Opus One
restaurant that opened Aug.
24,1987, on E. Lamed and
continues to make it big in
downtown Detroit . . . Owners
Jim Kokus and Ed Mandziara
have mixed quality and ser-
vice to combine with Ex-
ecutive Chef Peter Loren's top
culinary offerings . . . When it
first opened, 52 people had
dinner with all but two being
family and friends invited to
the new restaurant . . . The
second night, a total of nine
dinners were served . . .
day, Opus One puts out a
weekly average of 1,200 to
1,400 . . . Invitational Artfest
outdoors by Roeper City and
Country School is tomorrow
and Sunday, 10 to 6, at its
Bloomfield Hills campus. El
