Receive Award
Jerusalem (JTA) — A
oup of 15 Albanians, most
f them Muslims, have
eceived Righteous Among
'the Nations awards at a
ceremony at the Yad
Vashem Holocaust
Memorial in Jerusalem.
' The members of the group
`were all involved in conceal-
ing Albanian Jews during
-=',3he period of the Nazi oc-
cupation, from September
1943 to October 1944.
, At that time, some 1,000
I Jews lived in Albania, 200 of
them indigenous and an-
other 800 refugees from
Yugoslavia and Greece.
The only previous occasion
when an Albanian gentile
was so honored was in 1990,
%w hen one individual receiv-
ed the award.
The trip to Israel by the
Group of 15 was made possi-
ble with the help of Harvey
Sarner, an American Jewish
philanthropist. This is not
the first time Sarner has
brought Righteous Gentiles
t'o Israel from Eastern
Europe, according to Selma
Schiffer, director of Ameri-
,can Friends of Yad Vashem.
Last year, he brought a
delegation of Polish Righ-
teous Gentiles.
He has also given money to
th.e Valley of the Destroyed
__:3mmunities, which will be
4naugurated on Oct. 14 and
ii5 at Yad Vashem.

The board held an
emergency meeting and
made an immediate grant of
$10,000 to assist those af-
fected by the riots, which
egan following the ac-
quittal of four white police
officers charged with
beating black motorist
odney King.
Then, in a meeting of the
(Los Angeles federations,
;synagogues, and community
relations councils, Mazon
was designated the coor-
dinator for the Jewish com-
munity's efforts on behalf of
the victims.
