FUR SALE

I The media has reported
roundups of tens of
• thousands of Croatians and
Muslims to makeshift con-
' centration camps not on the
• list Bosnian and Herzegovi-
nian authorities permit the
i• International Red Cross to
visit. Refugees from these
camps all spoke of heavily
guarded factories, schools
1" and stores where inmates
lived in "unspeakable filthy
conditions" and with
"disease as much a threat as
•.
execution."
a Tuesday afternoon,
American Jewish leaders
00 met with Undersecretary of
State Thomas Niles to urge
o' the Bush administration to
take actions to stop the
`violence. The leaders includ-
• ed representatives from the
American Jewish Congress,
the American Jewish Com-
mittee, the Anti-Defamation
0- League, B'nai B'rith, the
National Council of Jewish
-Women and the National
Jewish Community Rela-
' tions Advisory Council.
The State Department con-
firmed Monday that Serbian
• forces have opened detention
centers in Bosnia where
civilians are being tortured
and killed but said the
`United States has no plans
to intervene.
Ms. Weiner of the JC-
Council .said she phoned
friends in the Muslim corn-
` munity to discuss making a
joint statement. Last year,
the JCCouncil also joined
with the Detroit Muslim
• community in condemning
former Ku Klux Klansman
David Duke who ran for
• governor of Louisiana.
Victor Begg, vice council
for the Council of Islamic
Organizations in Detroit,
• blames President Bush for
letting the situation in
Bosnia deteriorate. "It
hasn't even been brought
before the United Nations. If
the United States would
have taken a strong stand
• when Serbia destroyed
Croatia last year, we
wouldn't be facing what we
are now."
The JCCouncil is urging
both Jews and non-Jews to
• urge Congress to pressure
President Bush to intervene
in Bosnia.
The joint statement
begins: "We condemn in the
01, strongest possible terms the
forced evacuations and
▪ violence directed toward
members of the Muslim
d community in Bosnia and
Herzegovina. The terrifying
reports from Europe call to
mind the darkest hours of
World War II, and atrocities
that cannot be permitted to
occur again." El
