Judith Laikin Elkin

Exhibit Opens
At Maple-Drake

An exhibit will open 7:30
p.m. Aug. 6 at the Maple-
Drake Jewish Community
Center. "Voyages to Freedom:
500 Years of Jewish Life in
Latin America and the Carib-
bean" consists of 20 panels
with 230 photographic repro-
ductions of original artifacts,
documents and pictures that
begin with the Golden Age of
Spanish Jewry in the 11th
and 12th centuries and con-
tinue to the present. The ex-
hibit is on loan from the
Jarkow Institute for Latin
America of the Anti-Defa-
mation League of B'nai
B'rith.
Judith Laikin Elkin, who
chaired the International
Curatorial Commission for
this exhibition, will speak.
Ms. Elkin is a research scien-
tist at the University of
Michigan and director of a
year-long series of con-
ferences on the theme "Jews
and the Encounter with the
New World, 1492/1992."
Dr. Elkin was educated at
the University of Michigan
and Columbia University,
earning her Ph.D. in Latin
American history at the U of
M in 1976. She is founding
president of the Latin Amer-
ican Jewish Studies
Association.
The exhibition, through
Aug. 31. is free.

Children's Tale
Done As Play

Hansel & Gretel will be
presented 7:30 p.m. Aug. 4, at
the Maple-Drake Jewish
Community Center. The pro-
duction will be produced by
the Children's Entertainment
Company for youngsters from
3 to 103; children can sit on
the stage during the play and
chat with the actors.
Tickets can be purchased at
the JCC box office. For infor-
mation, call the Cultural Arts
Department, 661-1000.
