The Donna Jacobs Gallery
will host Of Royalty and
Ritual, focusing on examples
of sub-Saharan African art,
through Aug. 29.
The artworks in this exhibi-
tion originate in Gambia,
Ghana, Niberia, Zaire, Tan-
zania, Kenya and South
Africa. The sculpture in-
' eludes small wood and ivory
" figures along with gold-leafed
sword pommels and elabo-
rately carved royal standards.
The jewelry ranges from
trade beads to patterned
beads of horn made by the
Kikuyu people of Kenya. The
textiles include embroidery in
palm fiber, velour, weaving
= and beadwork.
Gallery hours are Tuesday
through Saturday, 11-5:30.
The gallery is located at 574
N. Woodward in Birmingham.

On Exhibit At JCC
The exhibition "Voyages To
Freedom, 500 Years of Jewish
Life in Latin American and
the Caribbean" will run Aug.
6 through Aug. 31 at the
Maple-Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center.
This exhibit, which under-
scores the participation of
Jews in the age of exploration
and in the subsequent of
Latin America and the Carib-
bean, is on national tour.
Judith Laikin Elkin, scholar
in Latin American Jewish
studies and the curator for
this exhibit, will be the fea-
tured speaker at the opening
reception, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 6.
The exhibit is sponsored by
the Jewish Historical Society,
under a grant from Norman
Allan, in cooperation with the
Center, and co-sponsored by
the Anti-Defamation League
of B'nai B'rith, Wayne State
University Cohn-Haddow
Center for Judaic Studies,
