Petition Lists
Vichy Crimes

Paris (JTA) — President
Francois Mitterrand was
publicly urged to acknowl-
edge officially that the Vichy
regime perpetrated crimes
against the Jews simply be-
cause they were Jews.
A petition signed by some
200 French scholars and in-
tellectuals, Jews and non-
Jews, requested "this sym-
bolic action in memory of the
victims and their descen-
dants, in the name of the col-
lective memory of France."
The petition was published
in the influential daily Le
Monde. Mr. Mitterrand did
not immediately respond.
A few high-ranking Vichy
officials were punished for
treason and collaboration
with the enemy. But in the
47 years since the end of
World War II, no one at the
highest government level
has proclaimed that the
Vichy regime, of its own
volition, segregated Jews
and persecuted them.
An opportune moment for
an official acknowledgement
would be the upcoming
commemoration of the so-
called "Vel d'Hiv" round-
ups of Jews that took place
on July 16 and 17, 1942, at
the sports stadium known as
the Velodrome d'Hiver.

London (JTA) — The Eu-
ropean Parliament has
backed a move that, if
implemented, could send the
cost of kosher meat in
Britain skyrocketing.
Members of the European
Parliament, the legislative
branch of the European
Community, declared that
consumers must he told if
they are buying meat pro-
duced by religious slaughter.
But despite the politicians'
vote, an official at the Euro-
pean Commission, the E.C.'s
administrative body, said
the proposal was unlikely to
become European law.
The back parts of animals
killed by shechitah are cur-
rently sold to the non-Jewish
market because they are not
kosher. But if shops were to
start turning down labeled
meat, the cost would have to
be passed on to the kosher
consumer.
The proposal, put forward
by David Morris, a British
member of the European
Parliament, still must be
approved by the E.C. Coun-
cil of Ministers.
