D
retinas were not properly
attached due to a buildup of
r _scar
tissue which needed to
be removed.
Following surgery, Yosi
had difficulties breathing,
which required a longer
hospital stay and cost the
family more than they ex-
pected.
- When Ms. Shoohani and
Yosi arrived from Israel,
they came with the $18,000
---c they had raised to pay for
the surgery plus additional
funds to pay for other ex-
penses. Most of the money
' 'came from her parents, who
had to take out a loan from
their bank in Israel.

received some assistance.

Financial help came from
friends in Israel; both the
hospital and Dr. Trese
lowered their costs, and a
family in Oak Park opened
their home so that Ms.
Shoohani would not have to
pay for a place to stay.
She was also directed to
Jewish Family Services
where Sara Eisemann
offered her some counseling
and was unsuccessful in an
attempt to find her financial
support.
On June 17, Ms. Shoohani
and Yosi returned to Israel
after hearing that further
surgery was not needed.
They will return in six mon-
ths so Yosi's eyes can be
reexamined. ❑
