Leonard Shlain was
in town last week at
Bookpeople to promote his
book Art & Physics, publish-
ed by William Morrow and
Co. More than a dozen peo-
ple gathered, including
Sandy Nathanson and
Rissa Winkelman of
Bookpeople, to hear Dr.
Shlain discuss art as a vi-
sionary image for physics.
Dr. Shlain's thesis is that art
foreshadowed many scien-
tific discoveries. "In my book
I show how Giotto and
Alberti anticipated Galileo's
and Newton's mechanics.
How Cezanne and Monet an-
ticipated Einstein's theory of
relativity," he said.
Art & Physics is in its fifth
printing and is being trans-
lated into many foreign
languages. The book has
received good reviews and
was reviewed by the New
York Times on April 19. The
480-page book is easy to read
and entertaining. "I have
received enthusiastic letters
from all over the world," he
said.
Dr. Shlain admits that he
is neither an art nor physics
scholar but a self-taught
philosopher. The idea for the
book first came to him after
visiting the Museum of

with his 12 year old
daughter. He had difficulty
explaining the greatness of
art. While reading a physics
book during this time, he
made the connection.
Dr. Shlain, the son of
George and Frances
Shlain of Southfield, is a
surgeon in San Francisco.
His brother, Marvin, lives
in Oak Park. He is a 1954
graduate of Central High
School and a 1961 graduate
of Wayne State University
School of Medicine. He is
currently working on a se-
cond book, when he is not
practicing medicine. He per-
forms laparoscopic vascular
surgery. He also has some
patents pending on new in-
struments for this type of
surgery.
