Through A Window

Celebrating this 25th Anniversary year has
given all of us the opportunity to recognize
how much fun living at the Jewish Federation
Apartments can be.

Sunlight filters through the leaves in the Hechtman
Garden room... and beyond the window swells
JFA's newest building. It is a proud and sturdy
addition to our agency family, winding its
way across the landscape towards the woods.

Curious eyes have watched the progress all winter long from this side of
the wall. Who will the new neighbors be? How can we help them to feel
at home in this place?

When I took office, Hechtman II was barely on the drawing board, still a
dream and a concept waiting to mature. Oh, so soon, a new community
of residents will fill the halls, their voices and smiles breathing life into
the structure, making it a home.

Reflecting on my term as President of JFA, I can see clearly through so
many different windows. I see men and women making their way with
assurance and calm out to the Jewish Community Center, to the
supermarket, their synagogues and always at days end, back to JFA for
dinner. I have walked through these dining rooms so many many times,
waving to friends. I feel more certain than ever that the dining room is
the heart of this agency; that the intense humming of shared meals
offers every resident that sense of belonging so vital to human dignity
and well being.

The residents from all three of the JFA
buildings had the wonderful opportunity to
come together at Beth Shalom to see "My Fair
Lady" by Nancy Gurwin Productions. Afterward
they feasted on Zeman's pastries and enjoyed the company of their
friends. This event was sponsored by Morrison Custom Management
and Zemans.

The community participated in our workshop series, "To Remember
... and be Remembered," offered in cooperation with The Jewish
News. This four part series gave participants hands on, practical
knowledge on how to perpetuate family memories and ties. These
sessions were both enlightening and educational.

At one of our workshops, the residents displayed their talents with
an exhibit of art, poetry, short stories, jewelry and knit goods.
This showing was held in honor of Older Americans Month which
is celebrated, nationally, each May. Recognizing the many talents
of our residents was one more way of celebrating what JFA is really
all about.

As we lead up to the final part of our 25th Anniversary festivity on
Sunday, September 20, 1992, we anxiously watch the newest member
of our family grow and grow — Hechtman II. This new addition is
scheduled to open in early fall and already has many new residents
ready to move in. Opening this latest building will provide a perfect
ending to a marvelous time of celebration and an exciting beginning
to our 26th year.

I pass the gavel on to our new President with a sense of having been in a
very special place at a very special time. What a powerful team we enjoy
at JFA with an outstanding staff, Past Presidents who remain intimately
involved and a Board of highly motivated people.

Our mission seems clearer and more pressing than ever as we look
toward the 21st century. JFA means comfort, security, friendships and
the assurance that every resident has access to nutritious hot meals. JFA
has spent 25 years building family and the family is flourishing. I am
proud and deeply enriched to be a member of this unique family.

News Notes

In honor of the agency's 25th Anniversary, the
residents of all three JFA buildings celebrated at

delightful afterglow followed. The evening was
made possible by 25th Anniversary Corporate
Sponsors, Morrision's Custom Catering and
Zeman's New York Bakery.

All three Residents' Councils presented checks
