' Paris (JTA) -- France and
L, Israel will increase their co-
1 ° operation in the fight
, against drug addiction.
The venture was announc-
ed during a joint French-
Israeli symposium on the
`-' ways to fight drug addiction
held last week in Paris,
under the auspices of the
vice president of the French
Senate, Michel Dreyfus-
= Schmidt.
The meeting was organiz-
ed by Ma'avar, a French
L Jewish organization devoted
- - primarily to helping mem-
bers of the community, both
Jews and non-Jews, who
have a drug addiction prob-
lem.
Georgina Dufo is, former
French minister of health
and the leading French au-
thority in fighting drug ad-
' diction, told the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency that ac-
cording to her figures, there
are 120,000 addicts in
France out of a total popula-
(Th tion of 55 million.
"We intend to devote more
(
funds to research why a
whole generation is so badly
-- "D in need of drugs to alter its
mind," said Ms. Dufois,
whose agency has a $50 mill-
-- ion budget.
(-- ) At the symposium, field
----:D workers from Israel present-
- ed their methods of fighting
addiction. Rachel Bar-
r Hamburger, director of the
Scientific Commission of the
Anti-Drug Authority of
I ' Israel, a governmental body,
told JTA that she believes in
a two-level approach to the
problem.
"We don't believe that
fighting drug addiction can
be dealt with only by na-
• tional policies. We won't do
it by ourselves," said Ms.
Bar-Hamburger.
"What is needed here is
international cooperation.
We are proposing a parallel
approach on the regional
o and local level; the Israeli
Association of Mayors in-
tends to work with its Fren-
ch counterpart," she said.
The new approach was
hailed by Israel's ambas-
sador to France, Yehuda
Lancry, former mayor of
Shlomi.
According to Ms. Bar-
Hamburger, 160,000 Israelis
have had experience with il-
legal drugs in the past year.
"We are speaking of in-
dividuals from all layers of
society, including the Or-
thodox community, between
the ages of 12 and 40."
Ms. Bar-Hamburger added
that 3,000 addicts are receiv-
ing treatment in Israel.
