miserable because I was not
as religious as a rabbi should
be." He says that "fooling
around" with women was
his nature and he hated liv-
ing as a hypocrite.
When his father passed
away, Mr. Mason left the
rabbinate and began his
comedy career as a tummler,
or comedian-social director,
in the Borscht Belt of the
Catskill Mountains in the
late 1950s. He was an im-
mediate success and his ca-
reer soared until a now-
infamous appearance on
"The Ed Sullivan Show"
during which the host
thought Mr. Mason made an
obscene gesture and banned
him.
Mr. Mason was little-heard
from for many years, though
he says he was doing just
fine financially, doing his
comedy in clubs around the
country. "Show business is a
crazy business," he says.
"Here I was making
$500,000 a year as a semi-
flop, a second banana, and
people making $40 a week
felt sorry for me."
But despite his financial
comfort, Mr. Mason ac-
knowledges that he felt
restless. "Basically I'm an
egomaniac and I felt I should
be a major star in show
business. I had that restless
energy. It's like I was runn-
ing for president and I
couldn't accept being a sena-
tor.
"But I was philosophical. I
thanked God for what I had.
I've learned to see it all as a
game, to enjoy the trip of
life, not just the goal of life
because life is too short."
He honed his unique brand
of Jewish humor, mocking
people in a way that does not
sound offensive because
"they don't feel personally
attacked." He says Jewish
humor is "more insightful,
more self-deprecating, more
intellectual, more analytical
and more emotional" than
other styles.
