. Thomas nomination hear-
ings.
In recent years, Mr. Levine
has been one of Israel's most
reliable defenders in Con-
gress, and a fierce opponent
of arms sales to Arab

nations.
But some pro-Israel ac-
tivists have privately com-
plained about the big in-
vestment in his campaign —
especially since both his op-
ponents were solidly pro-

Israel.
a Rep. Boxer, who is Jewish,
will face conservative televi-
sion commentator Bruce
Herschensohn, also Jewish,
in November for the Senate
seat being vacated by the
retiring Sen. Alan Cranston.
Another Jewish woman

took the second California
Senate slot; former San
Francisco Mayor Dianne
Feinstein easily outdistanc-
ed her opponent to win the

Democratic nomination for
▪ the seat now held by Sen.
John Seymour, a Republican
who was appointed after
Pete Wilson left the Senate
to become California's gov-
fornor.
In Ohio, Rep. Mary Rose
qakar, a Democrat, defeated
long list of challengers —
including Cuyahoga County
Commissioner Tim Hagan,
who had won strong support
from the pro-Israel commun-
ity.
Ms. Oakar has been a fre-
quent critic of Israel and a
supporter of the Arab-
American cause; her defeat
had been high on the wish
list for pro-Israel groups. But
r in the end, Ms. Oakar's
strong support from organiz-
ed labor and her incumbency
carried her over the top. ❑

Berger Heads
New Panel

In a recent interview, Mor-
ton Meyerson — Ross Perot's
longtime business associate
and friend — indicated that
the stealth presidential can-
didate was assembling a
Middle East advisory group,
and that the name of the
chair of the group would
strike the American Jewish
community as an
"interesting and creative
choice."
Now there are strong in-
dications that the panel will
be headed by Marilyn
Berger, a former Washington
Post diplomatic correspon-
dent who now works for the
New York Times.
The Perot campaign refus-
to discuss the matter, and
Berger did not return a
teporter's calls. ❑
