FRIDAY, JUNE 5,- 1992

Mr. Schaengold came for the challenge.

to succeed. After a short few
months here, I've seen its
assets work. Its medical staff
is outstanding and com-
mitted to teaching on a level
second to none.
"Yes, we have negatives
here," he continued. "Our
location for one. But location
is too often a misperception.
Sinai is a community
hospital. We are here to
serve the greater Detroit
metropolitan area. We're
seeing hospital admissions
up now. But there's no ques-
tion that in this city and in
other cities around the coun-
try, Jews are moving to the
suburbs, sometimes the far-
out suburbs. But we've
opened points of service in
those suburbs. We still are
about the Jewish commun-
ity. From a clinical stand-
point, there is no reason not
to come here."
Dr. Schaengold emphasiz-
ed that Sinai will have to
change to compete, perhaps to
survive. He said joining a
system is in the future. The
winter cessation of talks
between Sinai and the
Detroit Medical Center
should not be seen as a set-
back for Sinai, he said.
"This cleared the air," he
said. "But both hospitals
have undergone substantial
changes. The discussions
ended in a cordial manner.
Sinai is now in a position to
move forward with its own
plan without worrying about
how it will impact on the
future of another hospital.
"Perhaps the major
change here now is that the
medical staff realize that
they can only survive in a

collaborative mode. Reason
and fairness between the -.=
hospital and the medical,
staff has to be achieved. Yes,'
that sometimes means hard
feelings along the way.
"But, there can only be one
agenda here at the hospital,
not many, different agendas
coming from many different ,
sources," he said. "This ism
where Sinai was before."
Since Mr. Schaengold
office in January, Sinai has !
been on a financial upswing.
The hospital has shown a
$4.4 million profit at the end
of March as compared to aL-2,
$6.7 million loss at the same
time last year.
"I think it took a crisis to
mobilize the hospital," he '-
said. "For a long time, Sinai
did not address its organiza-
tional needs until a crisis c
developed. Nov that has --11
changed.
"I wanted this institution
to concentrate on services,
its environment and on the
human relations side of life.
I wanted to rebuild a trust ,_,
with the medical staff. You
do these things, you wip,.
back the trust of the com-
munity. You rebuild your
image within the commun-
ity, the Jewish comnumity."
Mr. Schaengold said the
hospital's reputation is also '-
strong in family practice
medicine, psychiatry, reha-
bilitation medicine and
women's medicine. There is,
he said, a need to strengthen
the hospital's oncology
department.
"My role here is to make
sure this place achieves," hE
said. "That's the plan.
That's what we're doing." ❑
