songfest, an inter-
national film and pup-
pet festival, a march
and marathon, are just a few )
of the ways Jerusalemites, ;!
starting May 31, will mark )
the 25th anniversary of the(
reunification of Jerusalem. )
Twenty weeks of activities
sponsored by the Jerusalem
Municipality, the Govern-1
ment Ministry for Jerusalem
Affairs, and the World Zionist ( i
Organization, will "proclaim,!
to the world that Jerusalem
is, and always will be Israel's;
capital," says Avraham Ver-
diger, Deputy Minister for 'i
Jerusalem Affairs.
The 25th anniversary year
officially kicked off on May
11, at the conclusion of
Israel's 44th Independence
Day celebrations, with a;
ceremony at the president's '
residence.
The Israel Festival, whit
began May 16 and continue
through June 6, is a thre
week extravaganza of theater
dance and musical perfo
mances from Israel a),
abroad, including a recital by
flautist James Galway, a
Bach marathon, a concert by
the Alexandrov Red Army I)
Choir, and a selection of _/
jazz. The Great Chinese Cif _
cus, a splendid blend of dance 1 1
and gymnastics, and "Mum-
menschanz," the Swiss- 1
American troupe which ex-
plores the boundaries of ex- ,
perimental dance theater, 1
were also slated to perform.
Home-grown talent in-
cludes the internationally ac- I
claimed Batsheva and Kib-
butz Dance companies, and a
great variety of local street
artists.
A positive indication of war-)
ming Israel-Russia cultural
relations is the Moscow
municipality's sponsoring of
"Moscow Week" (July 1-8), an
exciting program of dance,
drama and music. (A i
"Jerusalem Week" will follow
in Moscow in October). This I
will be followed on July 9 by ;
the launching of the Jeru-
salem Cinematheque's highly it
prestigious annual interna-1
tional film festival.
July 27 will see the opening
of the Jerusalem Songfest, irl
which more than 1,0C
singers and dozens of choi ,
from around the world w
participate. And the ann

classical and avant garde
formances, a favorite NN
kids of all ages, will t
place Aug. 12-18.
