FRIDAY, MAY 1, 1992

e says he has learned
his lesson . . . this
time for sure . . . No
more bouncing around with
menu changes . . . No more
going off on "get rich quick"
schemes . . . No more
deviating away from what he
knows best, all probably
downfall causes at his
previous Dimitri's of
Southfield.
If so, and factors point to it
happening, the return of
Dimitri Syros could be a suc-
cessful one . . . His new
Dimitri's Family Diner which
opened April 8 on the Nor-
thwestern Service Drive at 10
Mile, formerly Denny's, is
what Dimitri was so suc-
cessful at years back in 1972
on 12 Mile and Schoenherr in
Warren.
His was among the first
family restaurants whose con-
cept included a complete din-
ing motif with something for
everybody — all ages — and a
lot of home cooking . . . Many
have followed his original
style of menu.
" Family dining is Dimitri's
specialty . . . open seven days
for breakfast, lunch and din-
ner . . . with daily specials
and a diversified menu to ac-
commodate all tastes at low
prices.
Menu selections have what
he considers to be the best of
all his bills of fare . . . Greek
favorites, many of which he
had at Dimitri's of Southfield,
Mexican, Italian, seafood,
bar-b-q, sandwiches, coneys,
homemade soups, nine salads,
fresh fish, etc. . . . Even a
children's menu section . . . a
mainstay in good family
dining.
The former Denny's has
been completely remodeled,
with seating for about 180 in
two rooms of murals depicting
a blue sky backdrop showing
3-D-like paintings of fruit
"falling from the sky" . . . The
color scheme other than blue,
of burnt rose and peach, is a
pleasant one surrounding
padded booths and seven
tables.
The big breakfast menu
plus specials can be ordered
anytime (another family din-
ing staple), 7 a.m. to 10:30
p.m. . . . Lunches include
many sandwiches, three or
four fresh soups daily, Greek
salad, Opa! saganaki flaming
cheese and a host of family
style favorites.
From the former Dimitri's
of Southfield, which Dimitri

had eight years, comes Chef
Richard Dobbs along with
other key pantry and line
cook personnel from the
previous locale . . . Also with
Dimitri are son Nick and
daughter-in-law Terri Syros
. . . Richard has been with
Dimitri since 1966, back
when he owned the Rainbow
Bar-B-Q on Six Mile and
Mound . . . has seen Dimitri
at his best and is among those
happy to witness a return of
those yeasteryears.
The new Dimitri's Family
Diner is quite a contrast from
his former place downstairs
in a sunken region where
many complained of walking
up and down . . . Not only is
the new restaurant on street
level, but there are now plen-
ty of windows . . . It even has
separate rooms for smokers
and non-smokers . . . no put-
ting the nico-quitters in a "No
Smoking" area just a couple
of tables or booths away.
An important thing lacking
at Dimitri's of Southfield was
ownership presence which
had been there at the begin-
ning and began to trail off
with sad results . . . Hopeful-
.- ly this will not happen again.

In the fresh, new Dimitri's
Family Diner, there will be a
Dimitri Syros family member
at all times . . . Dimitri for
lunch and dinner and Nick
and Terri at breakfast . . . No
more personnel feelings that
if the boss doesn't care
anough to be there why
should they put extra interest
in the place . . . Being on the
premises seems to instill a lot
of confidence among the
employees as well as
customers who like being
greeted by head persons.
Evening manager Jim
Stefanopoulas was bartender
three years when Dimitri's of
Southfield first opened its
doors.
And there's no missing
Dimitri's Family Diner at
night . . . It's the free-
standing building with a red
neon tubing stripe around it
that can be seen from all
directions . . . An outdoor
patio will also soon be open.
This type of dining may be
old hat for Dimitri, but he
can't hide his enthusiasm .. .
He's like a kid with a new toy
for the neighborhood to see
. . . Such excitement may be
just what the doctor ordered
in the rejuvenation of Dimitri
Syros in bringing out his vast
knowledge as a good family
dining restaurateur.
A plain, simple, down-to-
earth menu . . . nothing fan-

cy . . . with home cooking and
low prices . . . the successful
, format of a man whose burn-
ing desires may have
previously led him off the
track of what he knows best,
but has obviously returned
. . . Dimitri's Family Diner
has been greeted with high
emotions . . . People like this
guy and know that if he sticks
to his original concept, which
has proven so favorable for so
many years, they'll again
have a wanted place to go .. .
Dimitri Syros is again doing
what he knows best . . . you
couldn't make him any
happier.
CONGRATS . . . to Morrie
Schwartz . . . on his 55th
birthday.

in Cambridge, Mass., also has
his talents leaning quite a bit
to the marketing side . . . The
son of Sarah Lil's Harold
Finegood calls his company
"The Finely Good Cookie Co."
and has his fortune cookie-
shaped gourmet goodies with
white chocolate and milk
chocolate at local
supermarkets.
