the show also earned a
Drama Desk nomination as
best musical revue.
"It was so gratifying
because it was the first Yid-
dish musical to receive such
mainstream recognition,"
says Mr. Rosenfeld.
Who could resist a five-piece
klezmer band, under the
direction of Mr. Mlotek, play-
ing a hot, jazzy interpretation
of the old Andrews Sisters hit,
"Bei Mir Bistu Schoen"?
Who could not be moved by
the sentimental "Yosl, Yosl"?
And few can resist relishing
the jaunty cabaret feel of
Gene Raskin's "Those Were
the Days," which, despite be-
ing in the title-song position,
was added late in the show's
development.
The tune was made most
popular in 1968 by Welsh
singer Mary Hopkin, but the
melody, which had been
recorded in the 1920s, is
reportedly based on an old
Russian folk song. Act 2 of
Those Were the Days opens
with the verse, "Once upon a
time there was a tavern,
where we used to raise a glass
or two . . ."
That suggests a kind of
cabaret quality for what's to
follow with cast members
Mina Bern, Robert Abelson,
Lori Wilner and the popular
Jewish theater actor Mike
Burstyn, in the position
created by Mr. Adler.
"Those were the days, my
friend, we thought they'd
never end . . ."
