aking the wrong
turn and winding up
at a gas station
might have produced the
revelation that obviously not
everybody knows where
Grosse Isle is.
"It's that way," said the sta-
tion attendant or security
guard, 'pointing eastward,
"over in the Grosse Pointe
area."
Can this be the reason why
a lot of people don't know
about Perdino's or are they
just keeping it to themselves?
That gas station attendant
somewhere on Jefferson
should be barred from giving
directions . . . especially to
people from out-of-town .. .
He could have them driving
into the Detroit River.
Lucky I knew that Grosse
Isle is downriver, in the Tren-
ton area, and didn't fall for
those screwy directions by the
attendant who would pro-
bably even chase after people
the wrong way.
But enough about him and
on to Perdino's on Grosse
Isle's Macomb Street, owned
by Perry Thipis, a class-act
gentleman who was a waiter
three years, back in 1960s, for
Les and Sam Gruber at the
London Chop House . . .
Brother Dino operates the
Colonial House in Monroe,
which they both also own.
Perry and Dino had bought
Colonial House in 1971 where
Perry stayed until 1981 before
opening Perdino's in 1982 .. .
It had been a hard-rock bar
that was closed by the Grosse
Isle Township, who must have
been tickled pink to have
somebody like Perry take over
. . . and today couldn't be
happier.
Perdino's has a sailfish sign
outside but is not strictly a
seafood restaurant . . . serv-
ing a lot of steaks, veal, etc.
. . . and giving much food for
the reasonable prices.
Our waitress, Rose Proven-
zino, is a cordial lass with
smiling efficiency that shows
she has people-pleasing ex-
perience . . . Rose was
previously at Greek Island
(formerly Sero's downtown),
Mykonos Supper Club and
Hungarian Village . . . Her
personable ways are a treat.
Seating is for 130 in two
rooms where the continental
softness is replete with high-
gloss oak and simplicity of
pale pastels and brass . . . The
choice interior has a back-

wall mirror in one room and
mounted, stuffed sailfish in
the other . . . About seven
months ago, Perdino's did a
bit of remodeling to also in-
clude new padded booths top-
ped with mirrors, stained
windows and doors,
mahogany around the new
blue accoustical ceiling
among other decorative
amenities to go with the red
linen tablecloths and red
linen napkins . . . Its bar is a
little one that seats no more
than about six people . . . Two
words would best describe
Perdino's interior . . . in-
timate coziness.
The piano between Per-
dino's two rooms is not just for
show . . . a pianist tickles the
ivories every Friday and
Saturday evening.
Where did the name Per-
dino's come from? . . . Easy
. . . It's the combined names
of Perry and Dino.
Why Grosse Isle? . . . Where
else to open a good restaurant
with so much history to pro-
vide for the kind of romantic
setting Perry would enjoy be-
ing a part of with its beautiful
sights out on the water . . . A
place where he and wife Yian-
na could live and enjoy the
many hands of friendship.
The arms of Perry Tsipis are
ever extended in hearty
welcome to his pride-and-joy
restaurant . . . Perdino's is no
secret to Grosse Isle residents
. . . It's their pride, too.
BEST BET of the weekend
. . . Variety, the Children's
Charity (Variety Club)
Celebrity Gala awards and
fun night . . . this Sunday, 5
p.m. . . . at the new lavish
Ultimate Sports Bar in Pon-
tiac . . . with food by Ex-
calibur, Johnny Trudell and
his orchestra (starring
Florine Mark-Ross on the
drums) and some other ex-
pected entertainment sur-
prise goodies . . . It'll be a
happy time for attendees .. .
with proceeds going to a very
worthy cause . . . helping
children enjoy a better life .. .
Hope to see you there . . . I
wouldn't miss it for the world,
even if I wasn't getting an
award that evening.
CONGRATS . . . to Jack
Iden . . . on his 63rd birthday.
NOW COMES a new in-
ovation in pizza . . . low cal to
go along with the veggies and
other healthy, hearty pies .. .
Matzo Pizza is now at Cottage
Inn Pizza in Farmington Hills
on Orchard Lake Road bet-
ween 12 and 13 Mile, owned
by Sandy and John Crane,

who intend to have the crun-
chy goody all-year-'round .. .
It's approximately 7 inches
square with varied toppings
. . . John's idea wasn't just a
thought that stayed dormant
. . . As soon as the bright light
shone, he and Sandy followed
through and may have hit on
a biggie in the pizza game .. .
It's available only at the Cot-
tage Inn Pizza carry-out and
delivery in Farmington Hills.
50TH ANNIVERSARY of
the movie Casablanca has a
local flavor of much interest
. . . Dental Doc Gary Milan,
former localite living in
Beverly Hills, Calif. since
1964, owns the original piano,
the two passports for Ea Lund
(Ingrid Bergman) and Victor
Lazlo (Paul Henreid), plus
those two letters of transit
which were so important as

A Grosse Isle
restaurant is worth
the drive — and
the view.

part of the movie's plot . . . He
also has the doors to "Rick's
Cafe," some of the lighting fix-
tures and the Moroccan
screens . . . Gary's items, plus
the Maltese falcon, which he
also owns, were recently on
exhibit in Paris, France, by
Warner Bros.
MERCHANDISE will be
the one-of-a-kind type that
folks so often look for . . . It's
the second annual Greektown
Art Fair on Monroe, Beaubien
and St. Antoine streets May
1-3 . . . More than 150 profes-
sional artists and contem-
porary craftspeople will show
a variety of their work .. .
Hours are Friday, 11 a.m.-10
p.m.; Saturday, noon-10 p.m.;
and Sunday, noon-5 p.m.
There'll be sort of a two-for-
one show down there in
Greektown that weekend .. .
Wheels of Michigan goes on
next door, at St. Antoine and
Lafayette, with special edi-
tion vehicles and the first-
ever exhibit of all 44
Michigan-made cars and
trucks.
CONGRATS . . . to
Michael Abels . . . on his 50th
birthday . . . celebrated with
party for 80 by wife Dennie
and sons Ibny and Todd.
A PROUD night for owner
Joe Vicari, legendary chef
Aldo Ottoviani and head chef
Jeffry Kay as Andiamo Italia
teamed with Cloverleaf
Market to put on its recent
"Taste of Italy."
