landscaped shopping area.
Ahava, opened just a few
years ago, carries jewelry, ac-
cessories, crafts and other ob-
jects imported from Israel.
Even more extensive is
Masada Imports at 7050 West
Palmetto Park Road. Owner
Moshe Stein, an Israeli native
and former yeshiva principal,
opened Masada 17 years ago
and has been stocking his
store with a wide range of
Israeli made items ever since.
"This is my way to do some-
thing for Israel," says Mr.
Stein, explaining that 60 per-
cent of all his profits go back
to Israel.
Even though he's a
businessman now, he still
feels he's an educator. "I'm
educating the American
public about the beautiful
arts and crafts of Israel," he
says.
Customers here have a wide
choice of arts, crafts and more.
His stock includes arts, crafts,
books, Judaica objects. There
are items made of wood,
ceramic, hand-blown glass
and porcelain; a choice of 103
different seder plates, over
700 menorot and kiddush
cups of all sorts.
While they browse, cus-
tomers can listen to the taped
Israel music Mr. Stein usual-
ly plays. "Sometimes people
even start to dance, and I love
it!" says the energetic Mr.
Stein, who presides almost
like an impresario over his do-
main. Occasionally he'll sing
for his customers — "I'm the
singing clerk, and I only sing
Jewish songs," he says. He
also uses the store to conduct
classes in Jewish art.
The atmosphere here is part
of the fun: Besides the sounds
of music, there are also the
sounds of varied languages.
Customers often speak in
Yiddish and Hebrew as well
as English, and they strike up
acquaintances as they admire
the art or relax in the book
section. Mr. Stein loves to tell
the story of the day when two
customers discovered they
had known each other 40
years ago in Lublin, Poland.
Mr. Stein now has two
stores in the area; the other
one is 20 minutes from Boca
Raton at 5771 North Univer-
sity Drive in Tamarac, Fla. To
keep the stores well stocked —
he estimates he has about
20,000 items in stock — he
visits Israel regularly and
keeps in contact with the
craftsmen and artists he's
come to know over the years.
Clearly, this is more than
just a business for the former
principal. "People from all
over the country come in
here," he says. "And as an
educator, I'm introducing
them to the beauty of Israeli
culture." ❑
