Lakers, Barons, Chargers
Hold Their Heads High

RICHARD PEARL

Special to The Jewish News

W

e had nothing to
hang our heads
about."
So said Jeff Rosenberg,
senior co-captain of Andover
High School's basketball
Barons, in speaking of their
season-ending 69-66 loss to
Flint Powers Catholic in a
Michigan regional tourna-
ment game March 17.
But he could also be speak-
ing for fellow players at West
Bloomfield and Southfield-
Lathrup, because the Lakers
and Chargers, like the
Barons, bowed out in regional
play after first winning
Michigan district tournament
basketball championships in
this 1991-92 season.
West Bloomfield set a
season victory record and won
the league championship
undefeated. And Southfield-
Lathrup, runner-up to the
Lakers in the league play,
captured its first district title
in nine years.
"It was a tough loss,
especially for the seniors,"
said Rosenberg. But he
acknowledged that the An-
dover Barons, in their first
season under head coach Ed
Okuniewski, did far better
than expected.
Coming off a 2-18 season
last year, the Barons went
14-10 and won their first
district crown in 14 years.
They won the title by defeat-
ing host Avondale 78-76, us-
ing Rosenberg's last-minute
three-point field goal and
Ryan Fogelman's two free
throws.
Although Rosenberg, Mike
Laker, rebounding leader
Magi Fawaz (7 per game) and
second-leading scorer Marcos
Zuazu (14.3 average) will
graduate, Andover will have
back leading scorer Matt
Lowman (15.4 average), along
with Fogelman, shot-blocker
Keith Yarbrough (49 stops)
and sophomores Andy Rosen
and Jim Hubbard.
"It just makes me more ex-
cited for next season," said
the 6-foot-2 Lowman, who hit
70 percent of his free throws
and averaged 6.2 rebounds.
West Bloomfield's Lakers,
who launched a 23-game win-
ning streak after losing their
season-opener to Farmington
Harrison, avenged that loss
March 13 by romping over the
Hawks, 66-39, for their third
district crown in four years.
The Lakers then put away
Catholic League champion

59-50, in the regional
semifinal at West Bloomfield
on March 18 to gain the title
game against Detroit
Northern.
But Northern, which stop-
ped West Bloomfield in last
year's regional final, again
proved too much for the
Lakers, beating them 51-37
on March 20.
Laker Coach Tim Domke
thought more fouls should
have been called against the
hand-checking, inside-
bumping Jay Hawks of the
Detroit Public School League
and said he would protest to
the state about the officiating.
"The game was called very
differently from what all our
games were this year," he
said. Northern hit on 25 of 36
free throws, West Bloomfield
five of nine.

Watching a video of the
game, he noted that Nor-
thern's playing style had its
effect: "We weren't patient.
We panicked a bit and took
long shots."
Regardless of the last game,
thou4,11, the coach was "very
happy with the season. We
had the most wins ever (23),
it was the first time we went

undefeated in the league
(Metro Suburban Activities
Association) and we won our
third district title in four
years."
The Lakers' 23-2 record
broke the 22-2 mark set in
1969, according to Laker first-
year assistant coach Barry
Bershad. Bershad, who also
coaches the Jewish Com-
munity Center Varsity team
(they also had an unbeaten
season this year) was award-
ed West Bloomfield's Laker of
The Year Award.

Coaches Domke and Ber-
shad were mentioned among
the reasons Laker standout
Harley Marks plans to return
next season, although his
mother wants to move to
Florida.
"We've got great coaching,
I've got great players around
me and it's my senior year,"
