Marks said. "I think most
likely I'll be here this next
year."
Marks and fellow junior
Mike Roberts led the team
against Northern with eight
points apiece — far off the 6-7
Marks's team-leading
15-point average. Returning
with him and Roberts (13 per
game average) next season
will be Matt Domke (13) and
6-6 Shannon Polk, 6-4 Ray
Jurecki, Kevin Mulcaster and
several sophomores, including
Eric Friedenberg. The varisy
also will benefit from junior
varsity coach Stu Bronstein's
winning team.
Among those departing will
be Scott Zak and Mario
McKinley. Zak and Marks
averaged nearly 10 rebounds
each.
Of the regional title game,
Marks said, "I don't think we
were ready for their (Nor-
thern's) intensity!' He added,
"We killed ourselves by com-
plaining on every call!"
Southfield-Lathrup, which
was edged 52-50 by Northern
in the regional semifinal on
Leonard Bush's basket with
six seconds left, finished the
season 17-6.
"We played very well at the
end" of the season, said
Chargers coach Bob Herm. In
addition to finishing second
to West Bloomfield in the
MSAA with an 11-3 record,
his team won its first district
championship since 1983,
defeating Birmingham
Brother Rice 58-55 on Wade
Crawford's three-pointer with
one second remaining.
The Chargers will lose
seven of their top eight
players, including leading
scorer Doug Miller (13.5
points average). The lone
returning starter will be 6-4
sophomore Mark Taylor (11
points per game), who will be
joined by 6-3 junior Mikey
Brown. ❑

Medical treatment deci-
sions are difficult to think
about, to talk about and to
make. Beginning December
1, 1991, a new federal low,
The Patient Self Determina-
tion Act, requires that all
medical facilities give adults
information about Advance
Directives. The Advance
Directive is the legal right to
make decisions about your
medical care, including the
right to accept or refuse
medical or life sustaining
therapy prior to the
treatment.

In Michigan, the Durable
Power of Attorney for Health
Care Act is the advance direc-
tive. It is a legal and binding
document. The Living Will is
also an advance directive but
it is not yet a binding docu-
ment in our state.

The Durable Power of At-
torney is a written statement
which is generally completed
in advance of illness. It
declares what kind of
medical treatment you wish
should you become unable
to make decisions for
yourself. You are required to
name another person to act
as your agent. He/she must
agree to be your advocate
and make medical decisions
for you. Durable Power of At-
torney forms ore available
through your local legislator,
hospital or other sources.

These recent state and
federal lows giving in-
dividuals the power to make
decisions about prolonging
or ending their lives may be
in conflict with Halachic low.
There are differences of opi-
nion among rabbinical bio-
medical ethicists. You may
wish to include your rabbi
among those who will help
you make these very impor-
tant decisions. You may also
wish to discuss these matters
with your loved ones before
there is the possibility of life
threatening illness, when the
discussion can take place
with more comfort.
