Wells Cargo that night. The
officers were there to in-
vestigate what a car was do-
ing in the alley past business
hours. When the police
arrived, they found cans of
orange and green spray
paint. Painted on the wall
were a swastika and the
words: "F--- Wells Cargo";
"Hitler Rules,"; "Hail
Hitler"; and "F--- Jews."
According to the officers at
the scene, the paint was still
wet. Before pleading guilty,
Mr. Browning claimed he
was in the alley to go to the
bathroom.
The defendant had worked
at the store for three months
as part of a student work
program at Seaholm High
School.
Mrs. Goodman, owner of
Wells Cargo, said Mr.
Browning had lied repeated-
ly about his work schedule
and could not be relied upon
to show up for work.
"If he'd written 'Mrs.
Goodman is a stinker,' or
`Mrs. Goodman is a bad
employer,' I wouldn't have
pressed charges against
him," Mrs. Goodman said.
"But there was no doubt he
wanted to hurt us because of
our religion."
The incident
occurred in 1989 in
Birmingham.
Richard Lobenthal, direc-
tor, Michigan regional office
of the Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith,
agreed. "There is no doubt
that the means by which he
chose to attack were all anti-
Semitic," he said.
Judge Robert Templin
ultimately set Judge
Brookover's decision aside,
saying one can have more
than one motive for such an
action.
"Brookover accepted the
defense argument that the
spraying wasn't simply be-
cause the Goodmans are
Jewish," Mr. Lobenthal said.
"But the fact is, there wasn't
one reference to Browning's
being fired. All of it was
directed toward the Good-
mans religion."
For Mr. and Mrs. Good-
man, business owners for 11
years, the process has been
an ordeal. "The Nazis must
learn that Americans will
not tolerate their running
rampant in this county," Mr.
Goodman said.
"I don't know to whom
we're sending this mes-
sage," added Mrs. Goodman,
"but I hate to think that to
effect change, one has to
employ such an amount of
force." ❑
