Pontiac on this show, the At-
tic will be able to see if there
is an audience in Oakland
County for the type of theater
that has won it much acclaim
for 16 years in Detroit . . . At
the same time Attic . will have
an opportunity to bring other
shows to its home base in the
New Center area.
"It'll be a whole new ex-
perience for us," says Trudy
Kiesewetter.
The Attic Theatre folks
have renovated the formerly
closed Strand for these perfor-
mances but will do even more
when shown that coming to
the suburbs is what people
want.
Abundance
is Beth
Henley's saga of love, lust and
betrayal in the old West.
DATE HAS BEEN pushed
ahead to April for the much
awaited opening of Hoa Koa's
second restaurant at Cross-
winds Mall, Orchard Lake
Road and Lone Pine Road .. .
Gene Woo isn't rushing
things . . . wants to be sure
it's right in preserving the
long-standing reputation
garnered by one of Oak Park's
dining pioneers . . . The Nine
Mile and Coolidge restaurant
will remain, run by son
Victor.
THAT BALLROOM danc-
ing at Mario's on Second, Fri-
day and Saturday nights, is
creating quite a sensation .. .
The Billy Prince Trio plays
oldies that so many people
love to glide with in much
rhythmic tempo.
IN 1947 he was a caddy at
Franklin Hills and worked
his way up to the men's locker
room in 1952 . . . When 1953
came, Mike Kelly left to enter
barber college.
About 35 years ago he
started his barbering career
with Al Nettle, Ron Eddy and
Howard LaLone . . . Mike and
Al used to vie for hair styling
trophies when the awards
started being given out . . . Al
got his first one in the 1960s
and Mike in the '70s.
Folks remember Mike Kel-
ly as owner of the Honeywell
Barber Salon for 15 years in
the Honeywell Building on
Nine Mile and Southfield.
Today he has another home
. . . and it couldn't be more fit-
ting, just minutes away from
where he lives in West Bloom-
field . . . Mike is together
again with the fellows who
started with him . . . All are
now at the Charter House
Hair Shop on the Boardwalk,
Orchard Lake Road, south of
Maple . . . and it's like old
times.
GOOD TO HEAR that
Adrian() Tonon is
recuperating from major
surgery in Houston, Texas,
and back at Cafe Cortina
owned by him and wife Rina
on 10 Mile east of Orchard
Lake Road . . . Now he can
redesign their kitchen again
at the restaurant to put out
the high-quality Italian food
for which Cafe Cortina is
popular . . . Its next theme
party is latter part of April
. . . Seems like Adriano and
Rina start the ball rolling on
these type of affairs and
others jump aboard the band-
wagon.
LOOKING BACK on col-
umns of yesteryears .. .
Sept. 12, 1947 . . . "Art
Rabin tells of picking up a
passenger in his cab, who
upon reaching his destina-
tion, said he had left his
money in the hotel . . . Hav-
ing already been swindled at
least three times before by
others using this type of
maneuver, Art said, 'Now
look, mister, either come up
with the fare or I'm calling
the nearest cop!' . . . The man
insisted he was telling the
truth . . . said he was in a
rush to fill an appointment
. . . and would have the
money sent . . . 'I felt like
knocking out a couple of
bucks worth of his teeth!
Finally I went with him, he
got the money plus a 10-spot
for my troubles. Well, that
night I said prayers of thanks
for controlling my temper.
The guy turns out to be Jack
Dempsey!' "
MAY 14, 1948 . . . "Humor
Dept. . . . About the lads at
the corner drugstore exchang-
ing stories on their ex-
periences with the opposite
sex . . . `Aw' said one. 'Girls
are a dime a dozen! . . . 'Gee,'
sighed a younger lad who had
remained quiet until now,
`and all this time I've been
buying jelly beans!' "
