Encounter Weekend
At Adat Shalom

Dr. David Kraemer,
associate professor of Talmud
and rabbinics at the Jewish
Theological Seminary, will be
the scholar-in-residence at an
Adat Shalom Synagogue en-
counter weekend March
14-15.
On Shabbat morning, Dr.
Kraemer will deliver the ser-
mon on "The Jewish
Response to Suffering." At a
lunch and learn program
following kiddush, he will
lead a dialogue on issues rais-
ed during the sermon. At 8
p.m. March 14, he will discuss
"Life Stages of the Jewish
Family: Some Traditional
Thoughts."
The weekend will conclude
with a 10 a.m. March 15
breakfast cosponsored by the
Men's Club. Dr. Kraemer will
discuss "The Things My
Hebrew School Teacher
Taught Me (But Shouldn't
Have)."
All programs are open to
the community. Reservations

learn (the only event with a
fee), for the Saturday evening
presentation, and for the Sun-
day breakfast. For reserva-

Adat Shalom Sets
Major Purim Events

"The Whole Megillah," for
adults and children, 6 and
older, has been set for 7:30-10
p.m. March 14 at Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
Arranged by the
synagogue's Jewish Ex-
periences For Families Com-
mittee, programming will run
from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Included
are Havdalah and the
preparation of shalach manot
plates for Jewish seniors, new
Americans and new
Detroiters, and patients at
Sinai Hospital.
Adults will study with Pro-
fessor David Kraemer of the
Jewish Theological Seminary,
while the children participate
in games, activities, music
and refreshments.
There is a charge per fami-
ly, which includes a "take-
home" Havdalah kit. Reser-
vations by March 9 are
required.
The
Adat
Shalom
Sisterhood will have its an-
nual Sonia Knopper Purim
Outreach Luncheon 11:30
a.m. March 16.
Included is a musical per-
formance by Cantor Larry
Vieder, accompanied by
Rochelle Lupovitch, songs by
the Adat Shalom Nursery
School, and a welcome from
Rabbi Efry Spectre, Rabbi
Elliot Pachter and Cantor
Howard Glantz. The Hillel

Day School eighth-grade class
will help serve the guests,
fellow Jews from Detroit.
The theme will be "Our
Heritage — Our Children" at
Adat Shalom's annual fund-
raiser, Purim Party Plus, 7:30
p.m. March 19.
The party will raise funds
for the continuing Jewish
education of Adat Shalom
youth.

Costume Ball
Set For Israelis

The Sabra Group of Greater
Detroit Hadassah is organiz-
ing a costume Purim Ball for
the Detroit area Israeli corn-
munity. The counsel general
of Israel to the Midwest, Yit-
zhak Ben-Gad, will be
honorary guest at the ball 9
p.m. March 21 at the Maple-
Drake Jewish Community
Center.
Festivities will include
Israeli food, music and danc-
ing. There will be costume
contests and drawings for
prizes.
Less expensive tickets may
be purchased in advance by
calling Adina Laks, 737-1695,
by March 10.
