The Friends of the
Southfield Public Library will
hold their annual meeting
and program 7 p.m. Feb. 11, in
the Marcotte Room of the
library.
A short business meeting
will be followed by the even-
ing's program titled
"Christopher Columbus and
the Politics of Culture."
Presented by Dr. Brian Mur-
phy, director of the Honors
College at Oakland Universi-
ty, the lecture will consider
Columbus' ethnicity and the
controversy surrounding the
discovery of America.
There is no fee; a reception
will follow.

The students of the Univer-
sity of Michigan's University
Dance Company will present
"American Masterworks"
Feb. 6-9 at the Power Center
in Ann Arbor.
"American Masterworks"
will feature a classic of the
modern dance repertory, Mar-
tha Graham's 1948 master-
piece Diversion of Angels.
This will mark the first time
that any Graham work has
been performed outside of her
company in 15 years.
With this signature work,
the Dance Company also will
present five new works by U-
M faculty choreographers.
Funded by a grant from the
Dayton Hudson Foundation,
the Ann Arbor Symphony Or-
chestra will make a special
appearance, performing a pro-
gram of all-American music
by Leonard Bernstein, Aaron
Copland and the 1989
Pulitzer Prize-winning com-
poser, William Bolcom.

The City of Oak Park,
Department of Recreation,
will present the live stage
production of Rumplestiltskin
11 a.m. Feb. 8 at the Oak
Park Community Center,
14300 Oak Park Blvd. There
is a charge.
The play is suitable for
youngsters ages 10 and under
and is an excellent program
to introduce young children to
the excitement of live theatre.
Doub Sherrer, a magician
from the Metro Detroit area,
will open the program which
will last until approximately
12:15 p.m.
