Talmud which they claim is
much more accessible than
the Steinsaltz, which re-
quires a teacher. Sheila
Tannenbaum, Mesorah's di-
rector of sales, said that this
project "has taken off like
nothing I've ever seen in 25
years of selling books."
The increased publication
of Yiddish material, in trans-
lation, also falls into this
category. Last year
Schocken alone published
two major Yiddish-related
works; Bridge Of Light:
Yiddish Film Between Two
Worlds, which was also the
companion volume to De-
cember's Yiddish film festi-
val at New York's Museum
of Modem Art, and the I.L.
Peretz Reader., by well-
known professor Ruth
Wisse.
Editors also mentioned
that works concerning the
Holocaust, virtually a sub-
industry in the Jewish book
world and one of 11 National
Jewish Book Award
categories, seem to be on the
rise. Last year, dozens of

books on the Holocaust were
published, and next year will
see even more. Perhaps the
most intriguing Holocaust
book of last year was Maus:
A Survivor's Tale, And Here
My Troubles Began, the
second volume of Art
Spiegelman's harrowing,
comic-book biography of his
father in which Jews are
mice and Nazis are cats.
"I am absolutely drown-
ing in Holocaust manu-
scripts," said Dr. Ellen
Frankel, editor-in-chief of
the Jewish Publication Soci-
ety in Philadelphia. "We re-
cently had an editorial
committee policy meeting to
talk about how to handle it."
Dr. Frankel added that as
survivors get older, many of
them feel that this is "their
last chance" to write about
their experiences. "For
many, it will be the only
book they will ever write,"
she said, noting that the
continual opening of East-
ern Europe will mean more
access to documents and ar-
chives. ❑
