psychotherapy, agreed.
"Religious books do seem
to be selling more," she said.
"I find that people are in-
creasingly turning to books
for understanding, satisfac-
tion and as a source of com-
fort and inspiration." Jason
Aronson will publish next
year, among other volumes,
Dr. Arthur Green's Seek My
Face, Seek My Name: A
Contemporary Jewish The-
ology, and a book for be-
ginning Talmud students by
Adin Steinsaltz.
Last year, Jewish Lights,
a small press in Woodstock,
Vt., was founded to deal
specifically with issues of
spirituality. During its first
year the press published
nine titles, including a num-
ber by Reform Rabbi
Lawrence Kushner (Honey
From The Rock), a leader in
the movement to bring spiri-
tuality into Judaism In '92,
Jewish Lights will publish
such works as Meditation
For Spiritual Living: A
"How To" From The Jewish
Tradition, and Tormented
Master: A Life of Nahman of
Bratslav, about the great
19th century mystic.
In this case, as in many
other cultural phenomena,
the Jewish and larger Amer-
ican culture seem to be tied.
Many editors noted that the
increase in Jewish spiritual
texts paralleled a more gen-
eral increase in New Age and
spiritual works.

The fact that last year's
National Jewish Book
Award winner for Jewish
thought was of a spiritual
nature — Neil Gillman's Sa-
cred Fragments: Recovering
Theology for the Modern
Age was often cited as ev-
idence for this trend.
Another major trend for
1991 seemed to be an in-
crease in books asserting the
identity of Jews as Ameri-
can citizens. The most expli-
cit examples of this are Let-
ty Cottin Pogrebin's Debra,
Golda and Me; Being Fe-
male and Jewish in America,
and Alan Dershowitz's No. 1
best-selling Chutzpah, about
the more assertive role Jews
should take as American cit-
izens.
But there are more subtle
manifestations of this trend.
One is the increased publica-
tion of traditionally reli-
gious texts, interpreted by
some as another form of cul-
tural assertiveness. This
trend, editors say, also
points to an increased sense
of comfort on the part of
consumers with buying
"ethnic" books.

Brooklyn, embarked last
year on a translation of the
