Steel was written by him last
year . . . beautiful words .. .
"Nature has passed through
the ages a power so beautiful
it is not diminished by time or
place. It changes the color of
trees, it causes flowers and lit-
tle children to grow, it makes
humans dream, it teaches
survival. And yet all that we
treasure is meaningless if we
have not learned the greatest
portion that life may bestow.
It is called the wonder of love.
When you have love, then you
know charity and sharing.
Your gift is peace and the
angels will always be by your
side."

SUPERBOWL SUNDAY

party at Mr. B's of West
Bloomfield on Orchard Lake
Road., will be 5 p.m., with
funds raised for American
Cancer Foundation, whose
Young Professional Commit-
tee, formed in 1988, is host
. . . The shindig is expected to
draw about 300.
A FAR CRY from the
Stage Restaurant of New
York that I used to know
when owned by the late Max
Asnas, but still a big-name
favorite . . . A franchised ver-
sion of the 50-year-old
Manhattan theater district
coffee shop was opened in
Atlanta, owned and operated
by Atlanta Restaurant Con-
cepts, a group led by Barry
Berlin and Tim Cole . . . It is
in north Atlanta between
Buckhead and Sandy Springs
in a 6,000-square-foot, free-
standing site that had
previously been Dalts . . .
Stage's signature pastrami,
corned beef, mustard and
pickles are trucked in week-
ly from New York.
OVERHEARD . . . at
Mario's on Second Boulevard,
"I've spent so much on my
girl, I've decided to marry her
for my money" . . . at Chez
Pierre, "I know he likes me a
lot. Today he looked into my
eyes the same way he looks
into the refrigerator" . . . at
Golden Mushroom Cellar, "I
don't know what the movie
was about, I couldn't get my
glasses on over my false eye-
lashes" . . . at Carl's, "When
my ship comes in, there'll pro-
bably be a dock strike on" .. .
at Boodles, "I hate golf. The
only reason I play is to make
it easy for my family to think
of something to give me on
my birthday."
LEONARD SIMONS has
long been noted for his crisp,
humorous wit . . . and those
who attended the 75th birth-
day party a few months ago
for Rabbi Richard Hertz at
Temple Beth El were all
smiles.
"I used to call Dr. Hertz our
Bar Mitzvah Rabbi because

he was Beth El's 13th head
rabbi since we started in 1850
. . . and because when he
started here, we restored bar
mitzvah. I'm told Dr. Hertz
received a letter from one of
the early bar mitzvah boys
who wrote, 'Thanks, rabbi, for
all those nice things you said
about me at my bar mitzvah,
but my mother did not believe
a word of it.'
"Another youngster in the
class asked the rabbi if he
could have his bar mitzvah
when he was 12 years old so
he could beat all the other
kids. And another of the boys,
when asked to name who he
thought was the most famous
Jew of all times, came up with
`Either Moses or Hank
Greenberg.'
"On occasion, I played golf
with Dick. He loved the game,
but a par shooter he wasn't.
The golf story I like about
him happened in the
Franklin Hills Country Club
locker room. The golfer get-
ting dressed next to Hertz
asked, 'How did you do today,
rabbi?' Dick, with a pained
look, replied, 'You should live
so long.' The other man said,
`What kind of an answer is
that to give a member of your
congregation?' 'Well,'
answered Dick, 'I had 105.'
"And that's why he switch-
ed from golf to tennis."
DOESN'T EXPECT to be
in town so I'm beating the
gun by a week . . . Congrats
. . . to sister Belle Weingarden
. . . on her birthday.
LOOKING BACK on col-
umns of yesteryears .. .

Jan. 2, 1970 ... "Story is
told by Oak Park Judge Mar-
vin Frankel . . . about the
businessman who had occa-
sion to consult a lawyer and
went to his office for advice
. . . Later, he ran into an ac-
quaintance and told of his ex-
perience . . . 'But why spend
money for a lawyer?' he was
asked. 'When you sat in his
office, didn't you see all the
law books there? What he
told you, you could have read
for yourself in those books'
. . . 'Yes, that's very true, but
that lawyer knows what page
it's on.' "
Jan. 24, 1973 . . . "We've
heard of not being able to get
in to see a doctor, but here's
one about a localite who not
only got in but couldn't get
out . . . Happened to Shirlee
Stieger, who went to see the
doc, was told to wait in one of
the exam rooms . . . Every-
body forgot about her and
went home . . . The janitor
finally heard Shirlee poun-
ding on the door and let her
out . . . Next day, guess who
saw the embarrassed doc first
without any trouble?" ❑
