Indian Images
At Mesa Arts
Mesa Arts will mount an
exhibit of Indian images by
Bill and Kathy Brewer
through Jan. 31 at the
Gallery.
The Brewers, a Sioux In-
dian couple, create fully
authentic, individually hand-
crafted, museum-quality
reproductions of Plains In-
dian artifacts. Each item is
individually researched from
the Brewers' photographs of
actual, observed museum
pieces and from documented
articles in Indian reference
sources.
The painted deerhide wall-
hangings, shields and sheaths
are made of materials used by
the Indians of the historic to
reservation periods (circa
1830-1900). Natural animal
ingredients are used to tan
deer, elk, antelope, moose or
buffalo hides. Real otter, er-
mine and other proper furs
are used for trim. Small,
smooth marine shells from
the northwest coast and other
authentic shells are used; por-
cupine quills are hand-dyed
in the correct colors.
Mesa Arts is located at
3288 Franklin Rd. Hours are
Tues.-Fri. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sat.
11 a.m.-5 p.m. For informa-
tion, call 851-9949.
