n board the Cape May
trolley, visitors ad-
mire the pastel-
colored houses, some with
towers and turrets, widows'
walks and elaborate trim on
their facades.
"The Victorians loved to
outdo their neighbors, and
each house had to be different
from all the others on the
street," explains our guide,
Jeanette Collins, as the
trolley skims along tree-lined
streets with storybook-like
houses.
No other seashore resort on
the East Coast has Cape
May's distinctive ambiance.
Situated on the southern tip
of the New Jersey shore, Cape
May is a Victorian village,
complete with a Victorian
theater, a Victorian gazebo on
the village green and Vic-
torian houses rich with fancy
"gingerbread" trim.
Indeed, so distinctive is
Cape May's architecture that
its historic district was
declared a National Historic
Landmark in 1976.
"You're not going to find
any modern condos in this
area," says Ms. Collins, as we
pass the Chalfonte Hotel,
built in 1876, with its steam-
boat Gothic-style front por-
ches, and the Emlen Physick
Estate, built in 1839 by noted
Victorian architect Frank
Furness.
Billed as the nation's oldest
seashore resort, Cape May of-
fers visitors much more than
a beach and seaside pro-
menade. Besides the trolley
tour of historic East End,
there are walking tours,
candlelight tours of its man-
sions, a Victorian-style
pedestrian mall and bed and
breakfast inns that feature

brass beds, antique furniture
and quaint front porches.
What's more, this is a
seashore resort that is a
popular tourist destination
well past Labor Day. Vic-
torian Week, held for 10 days
in mid-October, has become
one of its most popular events.
There are Cape May en-
thusiasts who love its sereni-
ty even in the dead of winter.
Besides all this, for Jewish
travelers, Cape May offers
another attraction — the
chance to see how its Jewish
residents, though a small
minority, have made an im-
pact far beyond their
numbers. A number of them
are involved in tourist-related

"Even though the
environment is not
strongly Jewish,
we feel a strong
sense of
Yiddishkeit."

businesses, including restau-
rants, inns and stores on the
mall.
An award-winning restau-
rant, 410 Bank Street,
features seafood and in-
novative French New Orleans
cuisine, is owned by Stephen
Miller, who is active in the
area's Jewish life. Mr. Miller
also owns the restaurant next
door, Frescoes, which features
Italian cuisine.
Two of the town's well-
known inns are also Jewish-
owned, and each one adds an
ethnic flavor to the Victorian
ambiance of Cape May.
Outside the Atlas Inn on
Beach Drive, an Israeli flag is
proudly flying, along with
nine other foreign flags
displayed outside the beach-
front inn.
