On the Boardwalk Entire Oceanfront Block
main streets of the Pletzel, is
typical of the casual, cheerful
style of any Pletzel restau-
rant. From the outside, it's an
unassuming place with a
stand-up counter where
falafel is sold.
Inside, the dining room is
also typically casual, with
brick walls, long tables and
colorful Israeli posters on the
wall.
The specialties here are
Middle Eastern, with menu
items that include hummus,
falafel, shish kebab, Israeli
salad, all of it tasty and glatt
kosher.
For those hungry for
Chinese cuisine, Lotus de
Nissane at 39 rue Amdelot,
offers a variety of Chinese
dishes, fully kosher and
prepared with Parisian flair.
Because of the many
Sephardim who live in Paris,
restaurants specializing in
North African cuisine are
also abundant. Dar Djerba,
for example, at 110 Boulevard
de Belleville, serves Moroccan
favorites and is one of the
numerous kosher North
African restaurants in the ci-
ty's Belleville section.
Still another North African
enclave is rue Richer. This is
a narrow street lined with
modest buildings — quite dif-
ferent from the elegant Opera
House just around the corner.
But the rue Richer is lined
with Jewish groceries and
restaurants, almost all of
them with kosher certificates
posted. Many of them
specialize in North African
cuisine.
The Caves of Tunis and
Restaurant Sammy Azar both
feature kosher Tunisian
specialities. And at Chez
Julot, the chef cooks up
flavorful couscous, the
delicately spiced dish made
with semolina wheat which is
virtually the national dish of
Morocco.
The Parisians also have
their own special flair with
delis. The landmark Jewish
deli in Paris is Jo Golden-
berg's, a colorful and spacious
corner building at 17 rue des
Rosiers in the Pletzel.
At the take-out section,
customers are lined up to buy
corned beef, cheesecake or
more exotic specialities like
pate and caviar.
Beyond the busy take-out
section is the main dining
room. Here the patrons sit on
leather banquettes as waiters
stride by briskly, carrying
platters with heaping por-
tions of food — everything
from borscht to brisket. It is
not, though, strictly kosher.
Strolling guitarists add to
the already lively ambiance.
Joie de vivre is in the air
here.
