Him

venerable patriarch stood up
proudly as he responded to
Pharaoh's question, "How
many are the years of your
life?" and Jacob answered,
"The years of my sojourn are
one hundred and thirty. Few
and hard have been the ye'ars
of my life, nor do they come up
to the life span of my father's
during their sojourn." Thus
did Jacob leave the presence
of Pharaoh.
The portion concludes with
the details of Joseph's
agrarian policies in dealing
with the remaining years of
the famine. The Torah wanted
to emphasize the great
benefits that Joseph brought
to Pharaoh and his Egyptian
people, thus accentuating the
ingratitude of a later
pharaoh, who in the opening
chapter of Exodus was the
Pharaoh "who did not know
Joseph."
The description in Genesis
of how Joseph and his sons
went down to Egypt and so-
journed in Goshen became
the transition bridge to Ex-
odus and the major biblical
motif of the book of Exodus
that was to follow.
The striking secularistic
complexion of the Joseph
story shows no Divine revela-
tion experienced by Joseph,
such as the Patriarchs had
each known, only the firm
consciousness by Joseph that
God was at work in a direct
intervention by God in the
unfolding of events acted out
by Joseph and his brothers. ❑
