On Sunday, hundreds of
volunteers will seek support
for the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign during the annual
phonathon held at the United
Hebrew Schools building. The
Campaign benefits hundreds
of thousands of Jews here and
overseas through more than
60 Federation beneficiary
agencies.

The needs are more press-
ing than ever, Campaign
leaders said. In October, the
Jewish Family Service's
Southfield office saw a signifi-
cant increase in requests for
financial assistance, many for
help to pay rent and buy food.
JFS has turned requests for
food from hundreds of Jewish
families to Yad Ezra, local
kosher food pantry. Requests
for financial assistance have
increased every month since
January 1989.
Since June, the Hebrew
Free Loan Association has
seen an increase in requests
from individuals who need
help to make rent or mor-
tgage payments or meet basic
living expenses. At Jewish
Vocational Service, waiting
lists for job placement ser-
vices have more than doubl-
ed, and counselors are book-
ed to capacity.

Groups from throughout
the community will par-
ticipate in the Super Sunday
telephone appeal. Among
them, New Americans, teens,
Neighborhood Project fami-
lies, synagogues and
organization members will
call Detroit area Jews, asking
for pledges to the annual
Campaign.
