The Sybaris Gallery will
mount a show titled,
"Beadazzled" Dec. 7-Jan. 4.
The 12 artists in this show
demonstrate that beads are a
potent and versatile art
medium. "Beadazzled" is an
exhibition designed to focus
attention on the formal and
content related issues which
stem from the artists' usage
and handling of beads.
Joyce Scott's neckpieces are
charming, playful and
upbeat, yet they also explore
difficult and sometimes pain-
ful social issues.
The sculptures of Iowa ar-
tist Mimi Holmes are
diminutive, delicate and
enigmatic. Each appears to be
a kind of fetish or other sym-
bolic object and much of the
artist's work explores the sub-
jects of anxiety, fear, religious
beliefs and sexuality.
Nearly two-thirds of the ar-
tists represented explore the
abstracts and decorative
possibilities that the use of
pattern and series provide.
Robert Ebendorf"s hand-
made beads can stand alone.
However, the artist achieves
added visual and surface com-
plexity when he combines
each unique module.
In the beaded designs of
Jacqueline Lillie, form and
surface are brought into an
active and vital relationship
through use of geometric pat-
terns and color fields achiev-
ed with individually knotted
beads.
Sherry Hart of Colorado
uses inexpensive, mass-
produced and common I
elements to challenge tradi-
tional distinction between the
materials of fine art and the t
materials of popular art. Ms.
Hart creates sculptures from
cast-off objects and personal
possessions.
Jeanette Ahlgren, Carolyn
Prince Batchelor and Donna
Wasserstrom integrate
historic and cultural symbols
of beads into their work.
Working with simple
materials, Ms. Batchelor stit-
ches subtle images of timeless
tribal garments.
Jeanette Ahlgren's hip
sashes and T-necklaces recall
wampum belts and bandolier
bags of various Indian groups
also.
Donna Wasserstrom's bead-
ed bags recall the faces that
appear on many bead bags or
panels done by the Yorbas, an
ancient African tribe, who us-
ed face images in their bead-
ed pieces to reflect spiritual
power.
Constance Abernathy, Jac-

"Girl Doll" by Hart

queline Lillie and Joyce Scott
make jewelry from individual
beads that in and of
themselves are extraor-
dinary; they combine them in
such a way as to form
wearable art. All three of
these artists are shaping
beads into aesthetically
dynamic jewelry.
The Sybaris Gallery is
located at 301 W. Fourth St.,
Royal Oak, 544-3388. Gallery
hours are Tues.-Sat., 11 a.m.-5
