Slogans Hurled
In Budapest

Budapest (JTA) — Several
hundred people demon-
strating against communism
shouted anti-Semitic
epithets at a statue of Bela
Kun that was toppled and
carted away last week.
Mr. Kun, whose father was
Jewish, headed the short-
lived Hungarian Soviet Re-
public in 1919. He escaped to
the Soviet Union where he
died in 1937, possibly after
being executed.
The crowd that shouted
"Bloody Communist" and
"Bloody Jew" at his image
was composed mainly of
members of the Saint Crown
Society, an extreme nation-
alist, anti-Semitic group
generally regarded here as
the dregs of society.
The occasion was the 35th
anniversary of the
Hungarian uprising, when
Soviet tanks entered
Budapest in October 1956 to
abort a revolt against Com-
munist rule.
Since the ouster of the
Communist regime in 1989,
the date has become a na-
tional holiday.
But apart from the ex-
tremists who used anti-
communism as a vehicle for
Jew-baiting, the response
Wednesday was apathetic.
Hungarians are less con-
cerned with politics than
with the economic hardships
that have come with their
political freedom.

Mrs. Gorbachev
Stays In Israel

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Raisa
Gorbachev has received a
postponement from the High
Court of Justice of her
imminent expulsion from
Israel for having overstayed
her tourist visa.
Mrs. Gorbachev, not the
wife of the Soviet president,
is the Russian, non-Jewish
mother of a woman now liv-
ing in Kiryat Shmoneh with
her Jewish husband.
When Mrs. Gorbachev's
tourist visa expired several
weeks ago, the Interior Min-
istry ordered her out of the
country. Preferring to re-
) main in Israel over living
alone in the Soviet Union,
she appealed to Israel's High
-Court, which issued her
postponement this week.
Mrs. Gorbachev, 51, is
staying in Kiryat Shmoneh
with her daughter, Marina,
who immigrated to Israel
some years ago with her
Jewish husband and their
children. Marina's father,
now deceased, was Jewish.
