ichael Weiner — au-
thor, nutritionist,
environmentalist
and ethnobotanist — quotes
Ralph Waldo Emerson and
Jackie Mason with equal
aplomb and is at home in Fiji
as he is on New York's
Lower East Side.
Sound like a healthy bal-
ance?
Then read on.
When it comes to diet, Dr.
Weiner also maintains a
healthy attitude. Naturally,
he likes to keep it simple.
Which cannot be said for
the traditional American
Jewish diet.
"Ashkenazi food is really
19th Century Polish holiday
food," said Dr. Weiner.
"Real Jewish food is what
they ate in Yemen."
American Jewry's
transplanted eastern Euro-
pean diet is loaded with
animal fats from both meat
and dairy that lead to block-
ed arteries and other
ailments, noted Dr. Weiner,
who is director of scientific
affairs for Nature's Herbs, a
leading vitamin and dietary
supplement firm.
The traditional Middle
Eastern diet reliant on
grains, beans, vegetables, ol-
ive oil, garlic and spices is
not — and may actually
ameliorate the health
ravages of past consumption
of animal fats, said Dr.
Weiner.
The results of two recent
studies in Israel support that
opinion.
Heart researchers who
conducted a four-year study
at Jerusalem's Hadassah-
University found that olive
oil, almonds and avocados —
all staples of the Middle East
diet — lowered the amount
of "bad cholesterol" in the
body (low-density lipopro-
tein), while not raising
overall cholesterol levels,
noted an article in The
Jerusalem Report, a weekly
English-language news
magazine.
At Nahariyah Govern-
ment Hospital, the same ar-
ticle continued, a three-year
study concluded that eating
cold-pressed olive oil lowered
the odds of contracting
cancer of the testicles,
bladder, kidneys and pro-
state gland. Cumin and
pepper, two spices widely
used in Middle East cooking,
also were found to reduce
cancer rates.
In the U.S., medical
researchers, including those
connected with the Pritikin
Center in Santa Monica,
Calif., have long-held simi-
lar views.
Unfortunately, the con-
temporary Middle East diet
has been altered to include
increasing amounts of meat
and dairy, added Dr. Weiner,
who lives in Tiburon, Calif.,
across the bay from San
Francisco.
Jews, it seems, are slow
learners when it comes to
food, despite, he said, having
a religious tradition that in-
corporated a healthy diet
into its theology.
"The laws of kashrut of
course have an ethical base

"The importance of
diet has been part
of the Jewish
consciousness for
so long it's become
genetic."
Michael Weiner
in terms of how animals
should be treated, but they
also have much to do with
the health of the people,"
said Dr. Weiner. "The law
became you don't eat pork
and you don't eat shellfish,
in part because at certain
times those foods were toxic."
Some kosher advocates
maintain that a vegetarian
diet is the highest form of
kosher diet because it alone
does not contribute to
animal suffering.
This religious emphasis on
diet, said Dr. Weiner — the
only person ever awarded a
doctorate in nutritional
ethnobotany (the study of
how native peoples make
dietary use of their local
plants) from the University
of California at Berkeley —
remains strongly imbedded
in the Jewish psyche. That is
so, he said, even though
relatively few American
Jews still follow a kosher
diet, and those that do often
eat far too much dairy, meat
