E
yen during the day the
place is pleasantly
eerie. A set of steps
that lead nowhere. Wild, un-
trimmed bushes and dead
flowers. An old shopping
cart, a broken-down car and
other debris sitting at the
bottom of what was once a
glorious mansion.
All that remains today of
Harry Houdini's Hollywood
Hills, Calif., residence is the
servants' quarters, a white
building where windows are
covered with sheets and a
broken toilet sits by the
front door.
But it's not the disarray
that disturbs the neighbors.
It's the spirits.
"Nearby canyon residents
tell of strange happenings on
the hilltop site," writes au-
thor Ken Schessler in This Is
Hollywood.
If Houdini, born Erich
Weiss, does haunt his old
California home, chances
are good he would be making
an appearance there this
week. It was 65 years ago
that Houdini died — ap-
propriately enough, on
Halloween.
Erich Weiss was born in
Budapest in 1874. When the
family immigrated to the
United States, Harry found
work as a trapeze artist in a
circus. He later changed his
name to Houdini, in honor of
French magician Robert-
Houdin, and moved to New
York. There, he found fame
and fortune with his extra-
ordinary magical feats,
which included making a
live elephant disappear.
Houdini traveled
throughout the world, mysti-
fying audiences with his
ability to escape from jails,
ropes, handcuffs and sealed
containers in a matter of
moments.
In the last years of his life,
Houdini lived at 2398 Laurel
Canyon Blvd. in Hollywood
Hills, a Los Angeles suburb.
He died in 1926.
To arrive at the site, one
must travel up a long and
winding road constantly fill-
ed with traffic, though
Laurel Canyon Boulevard is
hardly a main thoroughfare.
The house sits on a hilltop
corner, and the property is
now for sale.
The remains of Houdini's
former home are comprised
of only the servants'
quarters, a crumbling stair-
way and a balustrade in
ruins. These, plus the
mournful palm trees and
curious brick tunnels on the
grounds, make it easy to
understand why neighbors
might believe a ghost likes
the place.
Houdini's home is just one
of the creepy sites in
Hollywood Hills certain to
delight tourists with a taste
for the morbid.
Just around the corner
from the former Houdini
estate is Ramon Novarro's
home at 3110 Laurel Ca-
nyon. Today, the house is a
shrine to the 1920s leading
man who was murdered in
1968. Novarro's ghost also is
said to haunt Laurel Ca-
nyon.
At least one area psychic
researcher has doubts about
reports of any Houdini com-
munication from beyond the
grave.
Mark McPherson of Grosse
Ile is the head of the
Daedalos Agency, which in-
vestigates curious
phenomena — from the Loch
Ness monster to the exis-
tence of historic Camelot. In
1978, Mr. McPherson con-
vened a group to hold a
seance in Room 401 of the old
Grace Hospital in Detroit,
where Houdini died of acute
appendicitis.
Mr. McPherson invited to
the seance representatives of
the press and two psychics,
