minister and the foreign af-
fairs minister, that the
100,000 Jews in Australia
have close ties with Israel
and should have the same
air access that other com-
munities have with their
countries of origin.
The foreign affairs min-
ister, Sen. Gareth Evans,
was challenged this week by
Sen. Robert Hill, the opposi-
tion foreign affairs spokes-
man, to state unambiguous-
ly that past actions by Qan-
tas to block El Al landing
rights were not motivated by
the Arab boycott or other po-
litical considerations. Mr.
Evans said the motivation
was purely commercial.
Mr. Beazley told the com-
bined delegation of the Ex-
ecutive Council of
Australian Jewry and the
Zionist Federation of
Australia that the process of
assessing the details of El
Al's application was well
advanced and that Qantas
and the minister agreed, in
broad terms,, with the
implementation of an Israel-
Australian route.
