stubs, but like all the nuts
who swear by the sport, I
was happy to try it again.
My second trip out was no
different. I stood up with a
little more difficulty than
the last time, but as soon as I
was vertical, I started think-
ing big. You see, this time I
was out with Club Mad, and
they demand improvement.
They knew I could stand up;
but could I cut through the
wake?
I thought of childhood
dares, when I would leap
from what seemed like huge
heights, just to answer
someone else's challenge.
And then I thought of my
parents, who regard any
sports injury as an act of
utter stupidity. I gave it a
shot anyway.
No dice. My legs refused to
obey my brain. I stayed in
the wake for a few more
minutes. I got back into the
boat, daunted and a little in-
timidated. Especially after

Debbie Michelson
Is Tennis Champ
Debbie Michelson, a 1988
graduate of Seaholm-
Birmingham High School,
won the Rolex Midwest Divi-
sion III Singles Tennis Cham-
pionship late last month.
Michelson, a senior at
Washington University (St.
Louis), beat Alexandra Mar-
tin of Luther College, 6-1, 6-4.
The Rolex Regional Cham-
pionships consist of over 60
men's and women's events be-
Sam Fisher, in a tone typical
of Israeli bravado, told me
that I was too scared to ski
through the wake.
That's it, I thought.
Nobody insults my courage.
Okay, nobody insults my
courage to waterski. After
the group had its first ski
licks, I went out again, de-
termined to ski through that
wake.
The key, I found out, is to
face the direction you intend
to go. And bend your knees.
Doing both, I was sailing
through the wake, which
was bumpy, but ex-
hilirating. Taking myself
out to the smoothest waters,
beyond the wake's range, I
felt the full force of waterski-
ing nirvana.
Back in the boat, a little
shivery from the oncoming
chill of winter, I asked the
inevitable question: how
much is a wetsuit?
ing held this fall at American
colleges. Michelson will now
join the singles winners from
each regional championship
and compete in the annual
national championships, to be
held in Corpus Christi, Texas,
in November.

Fall Forum
For JCC Board
The Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan
Detroit will hold its Fall
Forum Oct. 16 at Maple-
Drake entitled "Outreach: A
Commitment to the Com-
munity." The program is
designed to help Center board
members recognize and bet-
ter understand how the
Center can address the needs
of the "underaffiliated"
population in our community.
In addition to a panel
discussion moderated by
Robert Aronson, executive
vice president of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, a series of workshops
also is planned. Topics to be
discussed include: "Teens,"
facilitated by Dr. Gary Faber,
principal of West Bloomfield
High School and Sandra
Faber, counselor/supervisor at
Bloomfield Hills Schools;
"Singles," facilitated by Rab-
bi Norman Roman of Temple
Kol Ami; "Single Parent
Families," facilitated by Allan
Goodman, executive director
of Jewish Family Service; and
"Individuals with Special
Needs," facilitated by Carol
Kaczander, co-chairperson for
Keshet.
For information, call Dr.
Morton Plotnick, 661-1000.
